Om Puri (Actor) .. George Khan
Born: October 18, 1950 in Ambala, India
Best Known For: East Is East, and its sequel West Is West.
Early-life: Om Puri was born on October 18, 1950, in Ambala, a rural area of northern India. His father was a soldier, and Puri planned to follow him into the military until, as a student at a Punjabi university, he joined a theatre group. His parents supported his decision to take up acting full-time when he enrolled on a three-year course at the National School of Drama in New Delhi, where he became skilled at playing a wide variety of roles, from Shakespeare to Kabuki drama.
Career: After a stint at the Indian Film Institute in Poona, Puri moved to Bombay, where his versatility gained him numerous roles, despite his lack of traditional good looks often associated with Indian film stars. His first film was Ghashiram Kotwal in 1976. After making Sadgati for Satyajit Ray in 1981, he began working in Western movies, beginning with 1982's Gandhi. Among his most famous projects since are The Jewel in the Crown, City of Joy (1992), Wolf (1994), My Son the Fanatic (1997), East Is East (1999), and The Parole Officer (2001). His more recent work has included Charlie Wilson's War (2008), London Dreams (2009) and West Is West (2010).
Quote: "My attitude to roles is, 'You give me anything, and I'll try to do my best with it'."
Trivia: He received an honorary OBE in 2004 for services to the British Film industry.
Jimi Mistry (Actor) .. Tariq Khan
Born: January 01, 1973 in Scarborough
Best Known For: EastEnders and Strictly Come Dancing.
Early-life: Born January 1, 1973, in Scarborough, Yorkshire, to an Irish Roman Catholic nurse and an Indian Hindu doctor. He was brought up in Cheadle Hulme, Manchester, and Cardiff, where he went to school. Jimi became interested in music from an early age, and began collecting records in his teens. He recorded several tracks with a friend while still at school, but after discussing his future with his father, decided to concentrate on acting.
Career: After attending the Birmingham School of Speech and Drama, Mistry moved to London and began auditioning. One of his first roles was a non-speaking part in Kenneth Branagh's Hamlet in 1996. He then appeared on stage at the Royal Court Theatre in East Is East; the subsequent film version made him a familiar face. But it was playing Dr Fonseca in EastEnders that turned him into a household name. He left the soap after two years in 2000 and appeared in Hollywood ventures The Guru, Ella Enchanted and Blood Diamond. In 2010, Mistry competed in Strictly Come Dancing, and was knocked out in week six. He's since appeared in West Is West and The Syndicate. In November 2013, he joined Coronation Street as Khalid Nazir.
Quote: "I thought my life had finished. I wasn't prepared for going from nobody knowing who the hell I was, to everyone thinking I was the character off a TV show. That freaked me out."
Trivia: He wed Flavia Cacace, his dancing partner on Strictly Come Dancing, in December 2013.
