A playwright becomes obsessed with an old portrait of a famous actress, and as he researches her life he becomes increasingly fascinated with the real woman. He uses self-hypnosis to send himself back to 1912 and meet her in person, and they soon fall in love - a situation complicated by her jealous manager.
