  First in a two-part documentary following the grizzly bears of the Alaskan wilderness as they come out of hibernation and are thrust together in a frenzy of feeding, fighting and mating. The opening programme introduces first-time grizzly mum Parsnip and her young cub Pushki. Only half of bear cubs make it through the season and they are both struggling to survive in the unforgiving region, which is ruled by massive male Van and his aggressive partner Alice - for whom Parsnip's youngster would make a good meal. Narrated by Billy Connolly

  The second of two programmes about the grizzlies of Alaska focuses on the bears during the world-famous salmon run, during which they must catch hundreds of fish if they are to bulk up to survive the harsh winter months. Parsnip and her cub Pushki have returned to the bay to feed on the salmon - but with predatory adults all around and fierce competition for the food, the mother must protect her baby as they prepare to hibernate.
