Great Canal Journeys is scheduled to air at these times (may include spoilers):
Tim and Pru strike out for the rarely navigated Brahmaputra river in the far north of India, where they meet a community of monks and hitch a ride on an elephant
Timothy West and Prunella Scales explore the Norfolk Broads. This is the first time the couple have visited the area, and they learn about the unique way of life that has developed over the centuries in this network of slow-moving rivers, fens, marshes and waterlogged woodlands. Their trip takes them to a marshman's cottage, the ruins of St Benet's Abbey; and a local Norfolk wherry, and brings to mind events from the book Swallows and Amazons
Timothy West and Prunella Scales explore the Marne-Rhine Canal in Alsace and Lorraine, close to France's border with Germany and running through forests, mountains and valleys. They get to grips with an unfamiliar system of locks, sample local wines, and pay a visit to the European Parliament in Strasbourg
Timothy West and Prunella Scales explore the landscape of north-west Portugal as they embark on a voyage down the Rio Douro. It's a journey that combines two of their favourite things - water and wine - as they follow the route taken by Yorkshire-born port entrepreneur Baron Forrester, and visit some stunning wine estates. The couple also stop off at the Factory House, a traditional English gentlemen's club that lies in the heart of the city of Porto
Timothy West and Prunella Scales return to Wales to explore a canal that has eluded them for more than half a century. The Monmouthshire and Brecon canal is cut off from the rest of Britain's network of waterways by the Black Mountains, and meanders its way through the tranquil Usk valley. Along the way the couple visit the old ironworks at Blaenavon, where children as young as five were once put to work, and lend a hand with some lock restoration work. They also explore the castle at Tretower - which is rumoured to be haunted
Timothy West and Prunella Scales travel down the River Nile from Luxor to Aswan. Tim has some misgivings about attempting such a daring journey, but is won over by Pru's desire for fresh adventure. They discover how travel along the river was vital to the ancient Egyptian civilisation, and discover how the first ever canals were constructed nearby to ferry building materials for the temple at Karnak. Along the way, they visit a Nubian village, purchase aphrodisiacs in a souk, and dance by moonlight
Timothy West and Prunella Scales explore the Naviglio Grande Canal in Italy, which runs from Lake Maggiore to Milan and is Europe's oldest working canal, providing passage for marble-carrying barges for over 500 years. Along the way, they stop at the Swiss lakeside town of Locarno, the gardens of Isola Bella, and Milan's most famous cathedral, as well as learning a traditional Italian barging song
