Elizabeth gives birth and Ross puts on a brave face at the christening, where he is angered to hear people gossiping about his relationship with Demelza. Wheal Leisure mine opens and the workers immediately hit ironstone, requiring additional funds for gunpowder. Zacky reveals his daughter Jinny has fallen pregnant to Jim, so Ross offers the young couple a cottage rent-free so they can marry.
