Siegfried's younger brother Tristan joins the practice after graduating from Edinburgh veterinary college. Siegfried applies to become attending vet at Darrowby racecourse - but the position comes with conditions, and he is torn between his ambition and his loyalty to the practice. Tristan collects the debts owed to the surgery, but ends up losing all the money and resorts to placing a risky bet to cover up his mistake. When the favourite to win on the race day is diagnosed with a inoperable condition, James has his first painful experience of having to put an animal down - only to end up being threatened with legal action by the owner
Mrs Pumphrey is convinced her beloved Pekingese is dying. James discovers that she has not been keeping her pampered pet on the strict diet he prescribed, and is forced to take the dog in while it recovers from illness brought about by over indulgence. Tristan prepares to return to university, but needs Siegfried's help to pay for his accommodation. However, his older brother is not prepared to part with a penny until he has proved he is serious about being a vet. James treats the Aldersons' prize bull, and Helen rewards his efforts with some unusual home baking
James is appointed as attending vet at the Darrowby Show - but Siegfried and Tristan warn him that the job is a poisoned chalice and expect him to quit after the first day. Mrs Hall has more faith in him, however, and makes a wager with the Farnon brothers. James finds himself surrounded by pushy farmers offering bribes to help them cheat their way to victory and faces a dilemma when the Aldersons desperately need his help in securing the sale of their prize bull
James's workload doubles when Siegfried takes ill during a harsh winter. Among his many patients is Dick Rudd's prized cow, which has an abscess in its throat and is on the brink of choking to death. Dick is devastated, having risked everything on the animal, leaving James determined to save the animal by any means. Mrs Hall discovers it is James' birthday, and Tristan tries his best to cheer him up by arranging a double date
It's Christmas Eve and the day before Helen's much-anticipated wedding to Hugh, and everyone is gathering to celebrate at the Skeldale Christmas party. However, James is called away to help with a dog in labour, so Helen asks to go with him to get away from all the wedding talk, only for a descending fog to trap the pair in the Dales overnight. The vet promises he will get her back in time for her wedding in the morning, all the while wondering if he will be able to suppress his true feelings for her. Siegfried and Tristan are left in charge of Skeldale House when Mrs Hall takes time off to meet up with an important person from her past. Siegfried immediately puts Tristan in charge of housekeeping duties and focuses on running the practice and educating a visiting work experience boy named Andrew Simmonds
The Skeldale House regulars think about what matters to them most when the radio reports that Britain is standing on the brink of war. As everyone processes the news, James discovers a case of TB at Heston Grange. Richard begs him not to report it or the farm will be shut down and he could lose his livelihood
It's Christmas in Darrowby and everyone is trying to make the most of things while the world is at war. A young guest brings some wonder, mischief and cheer to Skeldale House while everyone waits for important news. When Mrs Pumphrey heralds the arrival of a kitten in need of extra care at Pumphrey Manor, James has just the person to take him under their wing. Siegfried is asked to pay a visit to an injured River just before a big race and makes an important discovery which Sebright Saunders uses as leverage to get the horse back on the racetrack

Mrs Hall schemes to bring the boys together and sends them to Pumphrey Manor after an alarming report of an escaped animal from the Matron of the army convalescent hospital. After receiving outstanding exam results, Carmody is offered a position on a research programme in London, but he wants to decline it and stay at Skeldale, where he can support the war efforts as a vet. An exhilarated Mr Bosworth summons Mrs Hall to examine a piece of debris that has dropped from a plane into a remote field and Doris arrives at the surgery with a poorly ferret for James to treat
James starts to behave out of character while examining Tricki, and his health takes a turn for the worst. Meanwhile, Siegfried, needing an extra hand in Carmody's absence, recruits a reluctant Tristan to help. A broken-down car forces them to renegotiate their relationship, with amusing consequences
Skeldale House prepares for Christmas and Jimmy's first birthday, but everyone is rocked by news that Edward's ship HMS Repulse has been sunk. Mrs Hall has to endure an agonising wait, but when a young boy arrives at the surgery with an abandoned fox cub, she can't help feeling a connection with the animal. Meanwhile, Tristan is given an important Royal Army Veterinary Corps mission to source the best Yorkshire pigeons for a new breeding programme, for which Siegfried sends him to Enoch Sykes, a cantankerous pigeon fancier whose birds are having digestive problems. A memorial service is held in Darrowby to honour the war's fallen soldiers and Tristan tries to hide his emotion. He's keen to go for a drink with Siegfried, but finds himself at the bottom of his priorities. Meanwhile, James tells Mrs Pumphrey not to give up hope in her quest to find a mate for Tricki, and plans a date night to get some time with Helen
Helen is thrilled when Jenny gets exciting news and sets about getting her sister prepared for a big move, but soon realises neither of them are ready for it. Mrs Hall asks for time off for her granddaughter's birthday in Sunderland, and Siegfried starts to panic
