Early-life:
Dwight David Yoakam was born in Pikeville, Kentucky on October 23, 1956 to Ruth and David. He was raised in Columbus, Ohio. His first taste of acting came in school plays. He also sang and played guitar in local garage bands. After dropping out of Ohio State University, he moved to Nashville in 1977 to pursue a career in music.
Career:
After struggling to make his mark in Nashville with his brand of hip honky tonk music, Yoakam moved to Los Angeles. He performed his own songs in rock and punk rock clubs around LA rather than traditional country venues. His recording debut was the self-financed EP Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc. It was released later, with additional tracks, as his major-label debut album in 1986 and topped the Billboard country chart. Since then, Yoakam has released a number of popular albums. He made his big-screen debut as an actor in Red Rock West (1993). His movie credits also include Sling Blade (1996), The Newton Boys (1998), Panic Room (2002), Hollywood Homicide (2003), Crank (2006) and its sequel Crank High Voltage (2009) and Dirty Girl (2010). In 2000, he co-wrote, starred in and wrote the soundtrack for South of Heaven, West of Hell. On the small screen, he has appeared in Ellen, Wilfred and Under the Dome.
