Early-life:
Michael Carlyle Hall was born on February 1, 1971 in North Carolina. His father died of cancer when he was 11. In 1983 he graduated from Earlham College in Indiana. He went on to study at New York University and emerged with a Master of Fine Arts in acting. He honed his craft in off-Broadway plays, including Macbeth, Timon of Athens, The English Teachers, Cymbeline and Henry V.
Career:
Michael gave an acclaimed performance on Broadway as the master of ceremonies in director Sam Mendes's version of Cabaret, and has appeared in the stage version of long-running musical Chicago. Cult American series Six Feet Under turned him into an overnight star in 2001 when he was cast as gay undertaker David Fisher. His rising star shone even brighter when he landed the lead role in Showtime series Dexter in 2006. He has received several awards and nominations for his portrayal as Dexter, including a Golden Globe win in 2010. He also starred in the well-received 2010 comedy film Peep.
