Early-life:
Born Curtis James Jackson III on July 6, 1975, in the South Jamaica area of Queens, New York, where he had a tough upbringing - his father walked out on the family and his mother was found dead in mysterious circumstances when he was eight. He was subsequently raised by his grandmother and harboured ambitions to become a heavyweight boxer but began to drift into crime. Following a spell behind bars, Curtis concentrated on rapping. He eventually caught the ear of former Run-DMC member Jam Master Jay, who produced a number of tracks for him.
Career:
The rapper's career didn't really generate much interest until he joined forces with production team Trackmasters and signed to Columbia Records. However, before his album Power of the Dollar could be released, he was shot outside a music studio in New York, and subsequently dropped by his label. He continued to record, and his underground releases eventually came to the attention of rap superstars Eminem and Dr Dre. They worked closely with him to produce the massively successful album Get Rich or Die Tryin', which spawned the chart-topping single In da Club. The follow-up, The Massacre, was also a huge hit. Since then, he's also branched out into acting, starring in Get Rich or Die Tryin' (2005), Righteous Kill (2008), Dead Man Running (2009), Escape Plan (2013) and Spy (2015). He also stars in and produces the American drama Power.
