John Nettles (Actor) .. DCI Tom Barnaby
Born: October 11, 1943 in St Austell, Cornwall
Best Known For: Playing Jim Bergerac.
Early-life: John Vivian Drummond Nettles was born on October 11, 1943, in St Austell, Cornwall. He was adopted at birth by a carpenter and his wife, who was a cleaner. John later discovered his biological mother was an unmarried Irish nurse who died of tuberculosis at the age of 28. Despite these humble beginnings, he won a scholarship to study philosophy and history at Southampton University. He trained to be a teacher, but drifted into acting after appearing in a touring version of the play Camus during his time at university.
Career: While appearing in amateur drama productions, Nettles was spotted by an agent who arranged work for him at the Royal Court Theatre. He made his debut as a standard bearer in Macbeth, opening doors for Alec Guinness. His first movie was The Red, White and Black in 1970. His big break came in 1972's A World At War, followed by a four-year stint in The Liver Birds. Nettles became a household name thanks to Bergerac, which ran for 10 years until 1991. TV projects since include Romeo And Juliet, The Hound of the Baskervilles and Midsomer Murders. He has also provided the narration for such programmes as Airport and The Hunt.
Quote: 'I live in the tranquility and splendour which befits someone of my seniority.'
Trivia: Nettles received an OBE in 2010.

Neil Dudgeon (Actor) .. DCI John Barnaby

Best Known For: Being the new Barnaby in Midsomer Murders.
Early-life: Born in Doncaster in 1961. His dad drove a bread delivery van and his mum was an assistant supermarket manager, although they both also performed on the club circuit. Neil credits his own love of acting to a teacher who forced him to read aloud in an assembly _ it was supposed to be a punishment for misbehaving in class, but Neil found he actually enjoyed it. He went to appear in school plays, before studying drama at Rada.
Career: Neil made his film debut in 1987 with an uncredited role in Prick Up Your Ears, and went on to appear in London's Burning on TV the following year. He's worked pretty steadily since then in a wide range of TV shows, although he admits he's most frequently cast as a cop _ he's starred in Inspector Morse, Out of the Blue, Between the Lines, Messiah and Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Silk Stocking. Last year it was announced that he would be taking on his most high-profile police role to date when he took over from John Nettles as the star of Midsomer Murders. He has also starred alongside Caroline Quentin in the sitcom Life of Riley.
Quote: On joining Midsomer Murders: "My secret dream is that viewers will switch on, watch it all the way through and not notice there's a new bloke in it."
Trivia: He has starred in a number of dramas on Radio 3 and Radio 4.
Mark Gatiss (Actor) .. Rev Giles Shawcross
Born: October 17, 1966 in Sedgefield, County Durham
Best Known For: The League of Gentlemen.
Early-life: Born October 17, 1966, in Sedgefield, County Durham. He grew up opposite a Victorian psychiatric hospital, where both his parents worked. While at college, he had a job there as a gardener. Gatiss claims he always wanted to escape from what he regarded as a grim, northern childhood, although now accepts that Heighington, where he lived, is actually a pleasant village. After school, he took a year out to travel around Europe, then began a drama course at Bretton Hall near Leeds.
Career: Gatiss eventually settled in London, where he hoped to earn a living as an actor but made ends meet writing Doctor Who books. He and friends Steve Pemberton, Reece Shearsmith and Jeremy Dyson formed The League of Gentlemen in 1995, which had successful stints on stage, radio, TV and film. Since then he's appeared in Bright Young Things, Marple, The Quatermass Experiment, Nighty Night and Jekyll. Gatiss was also script editor on the first Little Britain series, and has penned episodes of Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) and Doctor Who (in which he's also appeared). He portrayed Malcolm MacLaren in the 2010 drama Worried About the Boy and co-created Sherlock with Steven Moffat.
Quote: 'I've done lots of acting and been very pleased with the response to what I've done. I'd like to do a lot more.'
Trivia: Gatiss has also written several novels and appeared regularly on the stage.
Brian Capron (Actor) .. Dave Hicks
Born: February 11, 1947 in Eye, Suffolk
Best Known For: Playing murderer Richard Hillman in Coronation Street.
Early-life: Born February 11, 1949 in Woodbridge, Suffolk. His father, an Algerian pilot, died in a plane crash before he was born. Brian was expelled from school for being disruptive, but managed to turn that disruptive energy into a successful drama career. He started out on stage, eventually coming to the attention of casting agents who thought he would be ideal for TV comedy. He made his small-screen debut in 1973 sitcom Beryl's Lot. He also had small roles in Doctor on the Go, Carry On Laughing, The Sweeney and Shoestring.
Career: In 1980 his regular appearances in Grange Hill as woodwork teacher Stuart Hopwood made him a cult star. A year later he played Donald Worthington in Coronation Street and returned to Weatherfield in 2001 as serial killer Richard Hillman. He picked up the award for Best Soap Villain Ever by readers of the TV Times and Best Storyline, Best Actor, Villain of the Year, Spectacular Scene of the Year and Best Exit at the British Soap Awards 2003. He has also appeared in Minder, The Bill, Doctors and EastEnders, as well as the films Still Crazy, 101 Dalmatians and Emma.
Quote: 'There was always a hint of melodrama with the gloves going on and the evil smile, yet even young kids who watch the show weren't really that scared of me.'
Trivia: Beyond acting, Capron runs an entertainment company that specialises in murder-mystery weekends.
Tim McInnerny (Actor) .. Hugh Dalgleish
Born: September 18, 1956 in Cheadle Hulme, Stockport
Best Known For: Paying Captain Darling and Percy in Blackadder
