Born: August 20, 1927 in London
Best Known For: Playing Mildred Roper in Man About the House and George and Mildred.
Early-life: Yootha was born in London on August 20, 1927, the only child of singer Hurst Needham and concert pianist Jessica Revitt. Yootha left school at the age of 15 and trained to be an actress at Rada. She toured with the Entertainments National Service Association, and was also a member of Joan Littlewood's Theatre Workshop with future co-star Brian Murphy. Throughout the 1960s and early 1970s, Yootha made guest appearances on a number of shows, including Benny Hill, Z Cars, The Saint, The Avengers, Dixon of Dock Green, and Steptoe and Son.
Career: Joyce's big break came in 1974 when she began playing Mildred Roper alongside Murphy in the sitcom Man About the House. Murphy played her hen-pecked husband George. The popularity of Murphy and Joyce's characters led to them starring in their own spin-off sitcom George and Mildred. The hugely popular series ran on ITV for five series until 1979. Murphy and Joyce also starred in a stage version of George and Mildred and a spin-off movie. Joyce died in hospital of liver failure on August 24, 1980, at the age of 53. Murphy was at her bedside.
Quote: Man About the House co-star Sally Thomsett revealed that Joyce was so popular, "she had more fan mail than the rest of us put together."
Trivia: A sixth and final series of George and Mildred had been written but Joyce died before he could be made.
