Julia McKenzie (Actor) .. Miss Marple

Best Known For: Fresh Fields and Miss Marple.

Early-life: Julia Kathleen McKenzie was born on February 17, 1941 in Enfield to Kathleen and Albion. She was all set to begin training to become a French teacher when she landed a scholarship to study opera. After graduating from the Guildhall School of Music, she toured in operettas and musical comedies for a number of years before landing a role in 1969 in the London production of Mame.

Career: In the early 1970s, McKenzie took over one of the leading roles in Stephen Sondheim's Company. And so began a long association with Sondheim's work. Her big break came in the mid-1970s in the musical review Side by Side by Sondheim. It was a big success in London and New York. During the 1980s, McKenzie won an Olivier Award for her portrayal of Miss Adelaide in Guys and Dolls at the National Theatre. McKenzie has also worked extensively on TV, notably in Fresh Fields and its spin-off French Fields, Blott on the Landscape and Cranford. More recently, she has played the title roles in ITV drama Marple and one-off BBC children's drama Gangsta Granny.

Best Known For: Playing Steve Arnott in Line of Duty.

Early-life: Born on May 8, 1984 in Greenock, Inverclyde, Scotland. He attended St Columba's High School. Initially, he dreamed of becoming a football player and often went to watch Celtic matches with his brother Barry. After he finished school, he signed for local professional football team Greenock Morton.

Career: Despite having no acting experience, Compston was cast in the lead role in Ken Loach's Sweet Sixteen (2002). Following this, he got a regular role as Ewan Brodie in Monarch of the Glen. He also reunited with Loach when he appeared in Tickets (2005). Compston has since appeared in a number of films, including Red Road (2006), True North (2006) and The Damned United (2009). He also starred in SoulBoy (2010). In 2012, he was cast in the police drama Line of Duty as the lead character, Steve Arnott. He also played Peter Manuel in the ITV mini-series In Plain Sight.

Quote: 'The last time I threw a punch was in primary school, and that was probably a slap.'

Trivia: He successfully fought with the local council to have Sweet Sixteen reduced to a certificate 15 so that teenagers in his area could learn from it.

Born: March 11, 1960 in Watford

Best Known For: Hustle.

Early-life: Robert Lewis Glenister was born in Watford on March 11, 1960. He is the son of director John Glenister and the older brother of actor Philip Glenister. In 1980, Robert made his TV debut alongside Peter Davison in the BBC sitcom Sink or Swim.

Career: Glenister is a much sought-after actor and he has appeared in a number of popular British TV shows, including Doctor Who, Chancer, Soldier Soldier, Casualty, Prime Suspect: The Lost Child, Midsomer Murders, Heartbeat, A Touch of Frost, Jane Hall, and Inspector George Gently. He is perhaps best known for his role as Ash Morgan in Hustle. More recently, he has starred in The Cafe, The Great Train Robbery, Law & Order: UK, Vera and Code of a Killer.

Quote: 'Your qualities as an actor are valued less now than they were in the past and it is a far more formal process.'

Trivia: Glenister's first wife was actress Amanda Redman.

Born: January 24, 1959 in Leeds

Best Known For: Comic alter ego Vic Reeves, and his surreal comedy with sidekick Bob Mortimer.

Early-life: Born James Roderick Moir in Leeds, on January 24, 1959. He moved to Darlington with his parents and younger sister, Lois, at the age of five. He left school without any qualifications and after his plan to attend art college was dashed, he became an apprentice at a mechanical engineering firm. A move to London in 1979 changed his life. Reeves appeared in several bands before turning to comedy, naming himself after singers Vic Damone and Jim Reeves. His friends still call him Jim, while his family knows him as Rod.

Career: In 1986, he received an Enterprise Allowance grant to finance the stage show Vic Reeves' Variety Palladium, which later became Vic Reeves' Big Night Out. He met Bob Mortimer during its run, and their partnership was formed. A TV version of the show appeared in 1990. The duo went on to create hits such as The Smell of Reeves and Mortimer, Shooting Stars, Families at War, and Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased). Away from the partnership, Moir has featured in various adverts, acted in Bafta winner Eric & Ernie, been a contestant on I'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!, presented Brainiac: Science Abuse, and featured in The Ministry of Curious Stuff. His recent work includes Hebburn and House of Fools.

Best Known For: Fresh Meat and Hebburn.

Early-life: Kimberley Nixon was born in Bristol on September 24, 1985 but she was raised with her six brothers in Pontypridd. She went on to train at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in Cardiff.

Career: Nixon's first break came in 2007 when she played Sophy Hutton in BBC period drama Cranford. Supporting roles followed a year later on the big screen in Wild Child (2008), Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging (2008) and Easy Virtue (2008). She played one of the leads opposite Rupert Grint in Cherrybomb (2009) and starred in Black Death (2010). More recently, she has enjoyed success on the small screen in Fresh Meat, Kidnap and Ransom and Hebburn.

Quote: 'I love British comedy so Fresh Meat is totally my sense of humour; I've always been a massive fan of Peep Show but work wise it has always been drama whether in film, TV or theatre.'

Trivia: She is a supporter of the British Humanist Association.

Best Known For: A seasoned star of stage, TV and film.

Early-life: Judy was born in Sheffield on November 7, 1935 to Catherine and Lawrence. She trained at Rada and made her stage debut in 1954 in Fools Rush In. Other stage roles followed until she made her TV debut in 1962 in a BBC play called Dackson's Wharf.

Career: Parfitt earned critical acclaim for her Gertrude in a 1969 stage production of Hamlet and she reprised the part in an equally successful film version in the same year. While continuing to grace the stage in a number of productions, Parfitt has been a familiar face on TV. Her numerous credits include A Tale of Two Cities, The Jewel in the Crown, Crown Court, The Charmer and Murder in Mind. In America, she starred in short-lived sitcom The Charmings in the late 1980s and had a recurring role in ER in the early 2000s. She made her Hollywood debut in Dolores Claiborne (1995). Other film credits include Wilde (1997) and Girl with a Pearl Earring (2003). More recently, Judy has starred in Heartbeat, Midsomer Murders, Little Dorrit, Jonathan Creek, Vera, Marple and Call the Midwife.

Quote: 'Getting old is a bugger. But you have to accept it or you'll be as miserable as sin. Going and having plastic surgery is pathetic.'

Early-life: Born in 1969 in London, the daughter of Roberta and Nadim Sawalha. She was named after her grandmother, a Jordanian businesswoman. She is of Jordanian, British, and French Huguenot ancestry. She was born into an acting family: her father Nadim is a well-known stage and screen actor and sister Nadia a presenter and actress. Julia became interested in acting at a young age, and landed her first break when she was chosen to star on the children's TV series Press Gang.

Career: She moved into comedy with a starring role in Absolutely Fabulous in 1992, and followed up this near-iconic role with parts in Martin Chuzzlewit, Kenneth Branagh's movie In the Bleak Midwinter and Lydia Bennet in the 1995 adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. In 2000, she had the major vocal role in Nick Park's animated caper Chicken Run, and she landed another significant part when she became the female lead in Jonathan Creek. Since then, she has favoured classic roles, winning rave reviews in Cranford and Lark Rise to Candleford.

Quote: On her sister: 'We have such respect for each other. If I ring her up in tears, she will give me the toughest advice, then she'll have me laughing in seconds.'

Trivia: She voiced a main character in the video game Fable II.

Early-life: Mathew James Willis was born in London on May 8, 1983. He has an older brother, Darren. As a child, Matt suffered from brittle bone disease, tunnel vision, asthma and hyperactivity. He went on to attend the Sylvia Young Theatre School. Matt found early success as a bassist and vocalist with pop-rock band Busted alongside James Bourne and Charlie Simpson. They sold more than four million albums worldwide before breaking up in 2005 when Simpson wanted to pursue other projects.

Career: Willis released his debut album, Don't Let It Go to Waste, in 2006. In the same year, he won I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here! Since then, he has presented shows for ITV2, starred in West End musicals Footloose and Wicked, and had roles on TV in Birds of a Feather and EastEnders. In 2014, Willis returned to music by touring with James Bourne and members of McFly under the name McBusted.

Quote: 'I was a party boy, I drank a lot and had a good time. I would drink all the time and after three days, I would forget the words to our songs.'

Trivia: Willis was admitted to The Priory in 2005 for alcohol abuse and re-admitted a year later for an addiction to cannabis.

Born: November 17, 1981 in Ascot, Berkshire

Best Known For: Being a member of Girls Aloud.

Early-life: Born Sarah Nicole Hardman in Ascot, Berkshire, on 17 November, 1981. Sarah attended Hazel Grove High School, before studying at Stockport College. She then worked as part of the promotions team for two nightclubs and sang in a group called Project G. In 2002, she auditioned for both Fame Academy and Popstars: The Rivals, and it was in the latter where she found fame - beating thousands of applicants to be chosen to be one of the members of the five-piece girl band that would eventually be known as Girls Aloud.

Career: Girls Aloud's first single, Sound of the Underground, went straight to number one in the singles chart, defeating Popstars' winning male group One True Voice. The band went on to sell more than 10 million records worldwide before splitting in 2013. In recent years, Harding has branched out into acting and cut her teeth in films like St Trinian's (2007) and its sequel St Trinian's II: The Legend of Fritton's Gold (2009) and TV drama Freefall. In August 2014, she was a participant on BBC One celebrity gymnastics contest Tumble. In early 2016, she was a contestant on Channel 4's sporting reality show The Jump.

Quote: Reflecting on her time in Girls Aloud: 'When there's five of you, it's difficult to have a say in everything. I'm looking forward to having more control.'

Trivia: In 2012, Harding starred in Run For Your Wife, which grossed only £602 on its opening weekend at the British box office.
