John Nettles (Actor) .. DCI Tom Barnaby
Born: October 11, 1943 in St Austell, Cornwall
Best Known For: Playing Jim Bergerac.
Early-life: John Vivian Drummond Nettles was born on October 11, 1943, in St Austell, Cornwall. He was adopted at birth by a carpenter and his wife, who was a cleaner. John later discovered his biological mother was an unmarried Irish nurse who died of tuberculosis at the age of 28. Despite these humble beginnings, he won a scholarship to study philosophy and history at Southampton University. He trained to be a teacher, but drifted into acting after appearing in a touring version of the play Camus during his time at university.
Career: While appearing in amateur drama productions, Nettles was spotted by an agent who arranged work for him at the Royal Court Theatre. He made his debut as a standard bearer in Macbeth, opening doors for Alec Guinness. His first movie was The Red, White and Black in 1970. His big break came in 1972's A World At War, followed by a four-year stint in The Liver Birds. Nettles became a household name thanks to Bergerac, which ran for 10 years until 1991. TV projects since include Romeo And Juliet, The Hound of the Baskervilles and Midsomer Murders. He has also provided the narration for such programmes as Airport and The Hunt.
Quote: "I live in the tranquility and splendour which befits someone of my seniority."
Trivia: Nettles received an OBE in 2010.
Daniel Casey (Actor) .. Sgt Gavin Troy
Richard Briers (Actor) .. Stephen Wentworth
Born: January 14, 1934 in Merton, Surrey
Best Known For: His role in The Good Life.
Early-life: Richard David Briers was born on January 14, 1934, in Raynes Park, London. The cousin of gap-toothed comic actor Terry-Thomas, Briers grew up in a flat above a cinema and attended RADA between 1954 and 1956. He has a sister and left school with no qualifications. He did, however, win a scholarship to Liverpool Playhouse, and soon became an accomplished stage actor. He moved to the Belgrade Theatre in Coventry before making his West End debut.
Career: Briers' film career began in the 1960s with British features including Bottoms Up, Murder She Said, and The Girl on the Boat. He turned his attention to TV, gaining fame initially in the sitcom Marriage Lines, but it's probably for The Good Life that he will be best remembered. He teamed up again with its creators, John Esmonde and Bob Larbey, on the 1980s sitcom Ever Decreasing Circles. Briers went on to join Kenneth Branagh's Renaissance Theatre Company, taking on more classical and Shakespearean roles including King Lear and Uncle Vanya. He's also appeared in Monarch of the Glen, Peter Pan, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein and Torchwood. He voiced the cartoon Roobarb twice - in 1974 and 2005.
Quote: On growing old: "I want very little action. I'm one of those awfully boring people who likes David Attenborough and the news."
Trivia: Briers was married to actress Ann Davies from 1958 until his death in 2013. They had two daughters, Lucy and Kate.

Career: Parfitt earned critical acclaim for her Gertrude in a 1969 stage production of Hamlet and she reprised the part in an equally successful film version in the same year. While continuing to grace the stage in a number of productions, Parfitt has been a familiar face on TV. Her numerous credits include A Tale of Two Cities, The Jewel in the Crown, Crown Court, The Charmer and Murder in Mind.
