Victoria Smurfit (Actor) .. DCI Roisin Connor

Best Known For: Ballykissangel, Trial & Retribution and Dracula.

Early-life: Victoria was born in Dublin in 1974. Her family, headed by her uncle Michael, is one of the richest in Ireland. Victoria was educated at Saint Columbia's College, Dublin, and St George's School, Ascot. After completing an A Level in theatre studies, she studied acting at the Bristol Old Vic theatre school.

Career: In 1997, Smurfit starred in BBC miniseries Ivanhoe, and a year later, she appeared in another period drama, Berkeley Square, before making a name for herself as Orla O'Connell in Ballykissangel. After two series of the BBC drama, the year 2000 saw Smurfit star on the big screen in The Wedding Tackle and The Beach and on the small screen in drama North Square and comedy Cold Feet. Her other credits include About a Boy (2002), Bulletproof Monk (2003), the lead role on TV in Trial & Retribution between 2003 and 2009, and Irish drama The Clinic. More recently, Smurfit has been playing glamorous society queen and vampire slayer Lady Jayne Wetherby in TV horror drama Dracula.

Trivia: Smurfit is a patron of children's charity World Vision Ireland.

Greg Wise (Actor) .. John Harrogate

Born: May 15, 1966 in Newcastle

Best Known For: Being Emma Thompson's other half.

Early-life: Born May 15, 1966, in Newcastle. His childhood experiences making glove puppet theatres with his older sister inspired dreams of becoming an actor: 'That's all acting is really _ playing.' His old English teacher was also an inspiration. Despite this, he followed in his parents' footsteps by training as an architect, but later studied drama at the Royal Scottish Academy in Glasgow. After six years as a student, he moved to London to look for work.

Career: Wise's first professional job was in Liverpool, starring in the musical Good Rockin' Tonight. He made his TV debut in the pilot episode of medieval drama Covington Cross in 1992, following it up with such forgotten projects as The Riff Raff Element and Typhon's People. His big break was period drama series The Buccaneers, which led to Oscar-winning movie Sense and Sensibility. Since then he's appeared in Judas Kiss, Hospital! (shown on five's opening night) Madame Bovary, Wonderful You, According to Bex and Hornblower. More recently he's starred in Cranford, Law & Order: UK and Homefront.

Quote: 'I have never actively pursued my career because it would make me insecure. I owe it to those around me to keep sane. We all do.'

Trivia: He married Emma Thompson in 2003.

Best Known For: X-Men: First Class and 12 Years a Slave.

Early-life: Born in Heidelberg, Baden-Wurttemberg, Germany, on April 2, 1977 to Adele and Josef. His mother is from Northern Ireland and his father is German. He has an older sister, Catherine, who is now a neuropsychologist. When he was two, his family relocated to Killarney, Co Kerry, where his parents ran a restaurant - his father is a chef. At the age of 19, Michael moved to London to study at the Drama Centre after being bitten by the acting bug while appearing on stage two years earlier.

Career: Fassbender's first TV role was in the mini-series Band of Brothers. Roles followed in Hearts and Bones, Holby City, William and Mary, Murphy's Law, Hex and Agatha Christie's Poirot. He made his movie debut in 300. Since then, he has established himself as a bona fide film star. His big-screen credits include Eden Lake, Inglourious Basterds, X-Men: First Class, A Dangerous Method, Prometheus, Frank and X-Men: Days of Future Past. Fassbender also has a strong working relationship with director Steve McQueen, with whom he's worked on the acclaimed projects Hunger, Shame and 12 Years a Slave - Fassbender received an Oscar nomination for his work on the latter.

Best Known For: Being the glamorous one in Dempsey and Makepeace.

Early-life: Born Glynis van der Reit on October 25, 1955, in Durban, South Africa. Aged five, following her parents' divorce, she moved to Johannesburg. Inspired by Hayley Mills' performance in The Parent Trap, she decided to become an actress. In her teens, she joined a speech and drama group and was so inspired by a tutor that she read Shakespeare's entire works in two weeks. Following her mother's death, she moved to London and studied at Mountview Theatre School. Glynis landed her first job at Chelmsford Rep.

Career: In the late 1970s, Glynis appeared in TV projects such as Terror, Play of the Month and Yesterday's Hero. In the early 1980s, The Sandbaggers, A Fine Romance and Blake's 7 boosted her profile. She landed the role that made her name in 1985 - Sgt Harriet Makepeace in Anglo-American hit Dempsey and Makepeace. She has since featured in Tales of the Unexpected, Babes in the Wood, The Bill, Doctors, Night & Day, Family Affairs, Emmerdale and EastEnders. Stage work has included Once in a Lifetime, Hamlet, Macbeth, Killing Time and The Graduate. In August 2013, she teamed up with her husband, actor Michael Brandon, for ITV's dancing reality series Stepping Out.

Quote: On obsessive fans: 'I had a couple of mystery admirers at drama school. One actually asked the principal for my hand in marriage.'

Trivia: She met Michael Brandon on the set of Dempsey and Makepeace. They wed in 1989 and have a son, Alexander, born in 1992.

Early-life: Carey Hannah Mulligan was born in Westminster, London, on May 28, 1985. Her father is a hotel manager and her mother is a university lecturer. She has an older brother, Owain. Her father's work took her family to Germany when she was three and she was eight when she moved back to England. Her first taste of acting was in the chorus during her brother's school production of The King and I when she was six. Several years later, a dinner event for aspiring actors held by Julian Fellowes and his wife Emma led to Carey catching the attention of a casting assistant. From this, Carey was invited to audition for a role in Pride & Prejudice (2005); she successfully landed the role of Kitty Bennet.

Career: Other TV work followed with roles in Bleak House, The Amazing Mrs Pritchard, Agatha Christie's Marple, Waking the Dead and a standout performance in an episode of Doctor Who. An Academy Award nomination for her role in An Education (2009) elevated her to the world stage and she has never looked back. Since then she has starred in a number of independent and big-budget films, including Public Enemies (2009), Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps (2010), Never Let Me Go (2010), Drive (2011), Shame (2011), The Great Gatsby (2013) and Inside Llewyn Davis (2013).

Quote: On being an actress: 'My parents were completely against it. They wanted me to go to a university. They didn't know any actors; no one in my family was an actor. They were scared.'

Trivia: Mulligan won a Bafta in the Best Leading Actress category for An Education.
