Richard Ayoade (Presenter)
Best Known For: The IT Crowd.
Early-life: Born Richard Ellef Ayoade on June 12, 1977, in London. His mother is Norwegian, his father Nigerian, and Richard is their only child. The family left the capital when he was young and settled in Ipswich. He was interested in film from an early age, and wrote plays and sketches while still at school before landing a place at Cambridge to study law, where he met David Mitchell and joined the famous Footlights group. On leaving university he spent two years writing for TV sketch shows and attempting to become a stand-up comedian.
Career: Ayoade's breakthrough came when he and Matthew Holness created fictional horror author Garth Merenghi; a stage show featuring the character won the Perrier Award, which was followed by the Channel 4 series Garth Merenghi's Darkplace. Ayoade went on to appear in The Mighty Boosh, Nathan Barley, Bunny and the Bull, and The IT Crowd. He made his big-screen directorial debut with the acclaimed Submarine (which he also wrote, adapting it from the novel by Joe Dunthorne), and has since directed The Double as well as numerous music videos for acts such as the Arctic Monkeys, Super Furry Animals, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Kasabian. He's was a team captain on Channel 4 panel show Was It Something I Said? and took over as host of Gadget Man from Stephen Fry.
Quote: "I find performing very difficult. It's difficult to be a good actor. I get very nervous, even though it sounds disingenuous, because you could legitimately go, 'Well, why do it?'"
Trivia: Here's Ayoade's tips for aspiring directors: "Try not to get depressed. You need to be healthy so don't get a cold. Get comfortable shoes because you don't sit down for two months."
Denise Van Outen (Guest)
Born: May 27, 1974 in Basildon, Essex
Best Known For: The Big Breakfast.
Early-life: Born Denise Kathleen Outen on May 27, 1974, in Basildon, Essex. A former child actress, van Outen went to a local dance school. After doing some modelling she began auditioning for dramas, but found it difficult to continue with her education. She enrolled at theatre school and, because her parents couldn't afford the fees, paid for it herself by appearing in small roles on TV and stage.
Career: Van Outen became a household name and lads mag favourite thanks to spells on The Big Breakfast and sitcom Babes in the Wood. Films such as Tube Tales and Love, Honour and Obey met with a lukewarm reception. Her stage work has been better received. She wowed the critics with her performance in Chicago, both in London and New York. Other West End roles include Tell Me on a Sunday, Rent Remixed, and Legally Blonde. She co-hosted Grease: You're the One that I Want for NBC in America in 2007, but was forced to take elocution lessons because the American audience did not warm to her Essex accent. Van Outen had better luck when she appeared on the panel of BBC1's Any Dream Will Do! which was casting Joseph in a new production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. She reunited with former Big Breakfast colleague Johnny Vaughan in 2008 as a co-host of the breakfast show on Capital Radio, but she quit a few months later half-way through her contract. In 2012, she partnered with professional dancer James Jordan on Strictly Come Dancing.
Quote: 'A lot of people probably think that I am outrageous in my ways but it's just fun. I often feel like a gay man trapped in a woman's body.'
Trivia: She has designed fashion collections for the website, Very.
Hugh Dennis (Guest)
Born: February 13, 1962 in Kettering
Best Known For: His regular slot on Mock the Week and The Now Show on Radio 4.
Early-life: Peter Hugh Dennis was born in Kettering on February 13, 1962. His father was Bishop of Saint Edmundsbury and Ipswich. Hugh read geography at Cambridge, where he joined the famous Footlights and met future comedy partner Steve Punt. After graduating, he worked at Unilever for six years. Hugh and Steve worked the comedy circuit, including London's Comedy Store. There, they were spotted by Jasper Carrott, who offered the pair a slot on his show Carrott Confidential.
Career: Punt and Dennis moved on to work on The Mary Whitehouse Experience, alongside Rob Newman and David Baddiel, before branching out into their own radio series, It's Been A Bad Week and the hugely popular The Now Show. Over the years, Dennis has appeared in a string of comedy shows, including The Imaginatively Titled Punt and Dennis Show, Mock the Week and Have I Got News For You. As well as keeping busy with plenty of voice-over work, Dennis is also an accomplished actor. His CV boasts roles in My Hero and the popular sitcom Outnumbered. He has been involved with The Now Show on Radio 4 since 1998.
Quote: 'Everyone's careers go at different paces; you need to forget what other people are doing and concentrate on your own progress.'
Trivia: Away from performing, in 2007, Dennis took part in a mountain stage of the Tour de France.
