Best Known For:
Being Liza Minnelli's ex-husband and his appearances on reality shows.
Early-life:
Born David Alan Gest in 1953, in Los Angeles, California, he had claimed his mother was a nun and his father was a fisherman, though given his love of tall stories, it's unclear whether this is true. Little is known about his youth, other than he socialised with the Jackson siblings. At the age of 17, Gest became a record publicist and a year later founded his own PR and management firm. By the 1980s, he had amassed a huge roster of wealthy clients and an impressive circle of celebrity friends. His biggest money-spinner was masterminding the Michael Jackson 30th anniversary special.
Career:
Gest first came to prominence in the UK when he wed singer and actress Liza Minnelli. The pair were set to have their own fly-on-the-wall documentary show on music channel VH-1, but the deal fell through. Following their separation and divorce, Gest went on to appear in a number of shows, most notably I'm A Celebrity… Get Me Out of Here! His bizarre tales endeared him to the UK public. In January 2016, he entered the Celebrity Big Brother house. He was found dead in the Four Seasons hotel in Canary Warf, London, on April 12, 2016. He was 62.
Quote:
'The biggest success for me would be to have a good, honest and loving relationship.'
Trivia:
Away from TV, Gest was an avid collector of showbiz memorabilia and penned an autobiography entitled Simply the Gest.
