John Thaw (Actor) .. Det Insp Jack Regan
Born: January 03, 1942 in Manchester
Best Known For: Inspector Morse.
Early-life: John Edward Thaw was born on January 3, 1942, in Manchester. He had a younger brother, Ray, but theirs wasn't an easy childhood. The boys' mother, Dorothy, left home when John was seven, while their father, Jack, was often away working as a long-distance lorry driver. Despite being painfully shy, John began appearing in amateur dramatics productions and eventually won a place at RADA, where he studied alongside his friend, Tom Courteney.
Career: Thaw's first professional job came at the Liverpool Playhouse. His film debut came in 1962's The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner, which starred Courteney. Thaw worked extensively on stage with the Royal Shakespeare Company and National Theatre, and early TV roles came in Z Cars and Redcap. But it was The Sweeney, alongside Dennis Waterman, that made him a household name thanks to its uncompromising style. He switched to comedy with Home to Roost, but it was playing Inspector Morse that made him a national treasure. Almost everything he touched then turned to gold; he starred in top-rated dramas such as Kavanagh QC, Goodnight Mister Tom and Buried Treasure. He died in 2002 following a battle with cancer of the oesophagus.
Quote: 'I was born looking fifty.'
Trivia: Divorced first wife Sally Alexander after four years and one daughter in 1968. Married Sheila Hancock in 1974. They had a daughter together, and Thaw adopted Hancock's daughter from her first marriage.
Dennis Waterman (Actor) .. Det Sgt George Carter
Born: February 24, 1948 in Clapham
Best Known For: The Sweeney, Minder, and New Tricks.
Early-life: Born February 24, 1948, in Clapham, south London, the youngest of nine children, the son of a British Rail ticket collector. As a child he attended the Corona Theatre School and began his professional career with a role in Snowball, a 1960 Children's Film Foundation production. The same year he made Night Train to Inverness, and was asked to join the Royal Shakespeare Company. Playing William in a TV series based on the Just William books made him a star. He then tried to break into Hollywood.
Career: At 16, Waterman returned to Britain and concentrated on stage work until an acclaimed performance in 1968's Up the Junction led to more film roles. Low-budget movies (such as Scars of Dracula) and TV shows (including Colditz) followed until, in 1974, he co-starred with John Thaw in Regan, the pilot episode of iconic series The Sweeney, which became a major TV hit. A 10-year stint in comedy drama Minder followed. Other projects include TV shows On the Up, Stay Lucky, and Circles of Deceit. He's also worked on the stage, most notably in Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell, and My Fair Lady. As Gerry Standing, in BBC drama New Tricks, he has introduced himself to a new generation of fans.
Quote: 'If I am not such a hell-raiser any more, it isn't because I've given up. It's just that my energy levels have fallen. I haven't stopped looking at women. I'm not blind.'
Trivia: He has made several records, including, famously, the theme tunes of several of his TV shows.
Garfield Morgan (Actor) .. Det Chief Insp Frank Haskins
Patrick Mower (Actor) .. Colin McGruder
Born: September 12, 1938 in Oxford
Best Known For: Playing Rodney Blackstock in Emmerdale.
Early-life: Born Patrick Archibald Shaw on September 12, 1938, in Oxford, he was one of three sons to a Welsh father and English mother. He later discovered he had three half-sisters from his dad's previous marriage. After training as a draughtsman, he caught the acting bug and honed his craft at Rada. He changed his surname to Mower and by the 1960s became a regular face on TV in offerings such as Swizzlewick, Mary Barton, Front Page Story and The Avengers. Detective series Callan and Special Branch also boosted his profile.
Career: Mower appeared in assorted movies, including Incense for the Damned, and The Devil Rides Out. His role as DS Steve Hackett in police series Target made him one of Britain's biggest sex symbols of the 1970s. He also featured in a host of cult shows, including Jason King, UFO, The Protectors, Space: 1999, The Sweeney, Minder and Tales of the Unexpected. He was also a regular panellist on the popular ITV game show Whodunnit. Mower joined the cast of Emmerdale in October 2000, as wheeler-dealer Rodney Blackstock, and has remained with the show ever since.
Quote: 'I am a Virgo and the only fault Virgos have is that they are always right.'
Trivia: He featured in one of the last Carry On films, Carry On England (1976).
Lynda Bellingham (Actor) .. Nancy King
Born: May 31, 1948 in Montreal, Canada
Best Known For: Those stock cube adverts.
Early-life: Lynda was born in Montreal, Canada, on May 31, 1948, and moved around a lot as a child due to her father's job as a pilot. The family eventually settled on a farm near Aylesbury. Her first ambition was to be a showjumper, but she had to give it up due to hayfever. Her parents were not happy about her decision to become an actress, which was inspired by appearing in various school productions. Lynda enrolled at London's Central School of Speech and Drama, graduating in 1969.
Career: TV roles came in the early 1970s, in shows such as The Sweeney, Within These Walls and Z Cars. Her first regular part was in General Hospital. Bellingham appeared in Confessions of a Driving Instructor (her debut film), The Fuzz and Mackenzie, while maintaining a stage career, but became famous thanks to a series of stock cube adverts, and capitalised on her mumsie image by playing Helen Herriot in All Creatures Great and Small. She went on to star in the likes of Second Thoughts, Faith in the Future, Martin Chuzzlewit, My Uncle Silas, At Home with the Braithwaites, Odd Socks, The All Star Comedy Show and The Bill. She starred alongside Liza Tarbuck in Bonkers and appeared as a contestant on Strictly Come Dancing. After losing a battle with colorectal cancer, Bellingham died on October 19th, 2014, at the age of 66.
Quote: 'The decision to give up chemo was a huge relief because I took back some control of myself.'
Trivia: Bellingham supported a number of cancer charities.
