Best Known For: Lost.
Early-life: Ian Joseph Somerhalder was born on 8 December 1978 in Covington, Louisiana; his mother is a massage therapist and his father is a building contractor. From an early age Somerhalder showed an interest in drama by getting involved in various theatrical groups, before his mother encouraged him to pursue a modelling career at the age of ten. While most children spent the summer holidays larking about aimlessly, he travelled to New York City to strike a pose and forge a life for himself in the industry. At the age of 13 his parents divorced, and around this time Somerhalder decided to scale back his modelling commitments to focus on school and sports such as swimming, fishing and training horses. In his late teens the lure of working in Europe drew him back into the industry, where he rediscovered his love of acting and began to hone his skills.
Career: A chance encounter on the set of Black & White (1999) gave Ian a freakishly lucky breakthrough: in a crowd scene of 400 people he was picked out by a talent agent and signed up for representation. He began appearing on TV, but got his first major casting in Rules of Attraction (2002) alongside Jessica Biel, Kate Bosworth and Dawson's Creek star James Van Der Beek. Ian went on to secure a recurring role in Smallville before appearing in JJ Abram's hugely hyped drama, Lost. The Louisiana-born actor played Boone Carlysle, a hot-headed protégé to survival expert John Locke (Terry O'Quinn). Boone's curiosity landed him in hot water, though, and the character was killed off during the first season, leaving Ian looking to exploit his heightened popularity. After a few small TV roles, along with flashback appearances on Lost, he finally re-emerged as the dark, mysterious Damon Salvatore in The Vampire Diaries.
