Early-life:
Born Simon Alan Gregory on October 2, 1974, in Wythenshawe, Manchester. An only child, his father was a bank clerk and his mother a police officer. He originally wanted to be a pilot and intended to join the RAF, preparing for what he believed would be his future job by enrolling with the local Air Cadets group. At the same time, he was attending Cheadle Comprehensive school, where he was interested in sport but also enjoyed appearing in school plays.
Career:
At 14, he successfully auditioned for the part of Steve McDonald in Coronation Street. Nicholas Cochrane, who was chosen to play his on-screen twin brother Andy, attended the same school, although they barely knew each other before the soap. Gregson was forced to change his name after learning actors' union Equity already had a Simon Gregory on its books. He stayed on Coronation Street throughout his teens and took his GCSEs in 1991 after studying with a tutor. He's now one of Corrie's most popular and longest-serving stars. In his spare time he works for various charities.
Quote:
On going into Coronation Street: 'The thing people didn't realise is that I hadn't acted before and I was in the country's biggest show. All of a sudden I had to be an actor. My last job was a paper round.'
Trivia:
In 2009, Gregson and his then-Corrie co-star Michelle Keegan played themselves in the third episode of Red Dwarf: Back to Earth.
