Early-life: Christian Charles Philip Bale was born in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire, on January 30, 1974. He has three older sisters. His father was a commercial pilot, his mother a circus dancer. Performing runs in the family - his grandfather was a comedian and children's entertainer, while his great uncle was an actor and John Wayne's stand-in for two movies. Christian was raised in England, Portugal and California, and made his acting debut in a cereal commercial in 1983.
Career: At the age of 10, Christian made his West End debut in The Nerd, opposite Rowan Atkinson. He was hand-picked from 4,000 auditionees to take the lead role in Steven Spielberg's Empire of the Sun in 1987. Unlike many child stars, he has successfully made the transition to serious grown-up actor. Films since include Little Women, The Portrait of a Lady, Velvet Goldmine, American Psycho, Captain Corelli's Mandolin, Shaft, Reign of Fire, Equilibrium and The Machinist. His status soared after playing Bruce Wayne in Batman Begins and its sequels. His other recent films have included The Prestige, 3:10 to Yuma, Terminator Salvation, Public Enemies, The Fighter (for which he won an Oscar) and American Hustle.

Trivia: Bale lost a more than four stone to play the emaciated lead character in The Machinist, then had to bulk up immediately for his role in Batman Begins.

Best Known For: Avatar.
Early-life: Samuel Henry John Worthington was born in Godalming, Surrey, on August 2, 1976 and moved to Perth, Western Australia, when he was six months old. He was brought up by his mother Jeanne and his sister Lucinda. He went on to attend John Curtin College of the Arts, a school specialising in dramatic arts. When he left college, his father gave him $400 and sent him on a one-way trip to Cairns, Queensland, and told him to work his way home. Sam worked on construction and odd jobs before settling in Sydney. At the age of 19, while working as a bricklayer, he was accepted into the National Institute of Dramatic Art. His first professional role came in the Belvoir Street Theatre's production of Judas Kiss.
Career: Worthington began landing guest starring roles in a number of TV shows, including JAG, Water Rats and Blue Heelers. He made his film debut in the Australian movie Bootmen (2000). Film roles followed in Hart's War (2002), Dirty Deeds (2002) and Gettin' Square (2003). His first break came a year later when he landed his first lead role in Somersault (2004) opposite Abbie Cornish. His international career took off in 2009 after playing Marcus Wright in James Cameron's Avatar. Since then, he has starred in Terminator Salvation (2009), Clash of the Titans (2010), Last Night (2010), Texas Killing Fields (2011), Wrath of the Titans (2012) and Cake (2014). Best Known For: Appearing in numerous period dramas.
Early-life: Born May 26, 1966, in Golders Green, London. She has two older brothers. Her father, Raymond, was a prominent banker who was left quadriplegic and partially blind following an operation to remove a brain tumour in 1979. He died in 2004. Her mother, Elena, is a psychotherapist. At the age of 16, Helena won a national writing competition, and used the prize money to pay for her entry in the actors' directory Spotlight, but her big break came when her photo appeared in the magazine Tatler. Encouraged by her father, she decided against going to university and began considering film offers.
Career: Helena's professional debut came at 16 in a TV commercial, swiftly followed by small-screen movie Pattern of Roses. The film Lady Jane followed, but it was 1985's A Room with a View which made her a star. Roles in Hamlet, Howards End and Frankenstein followed, and she was Oscar-nominated for 1997's The Wings of the Dove. The actress went on to prove she could do more than just period drama in projects such as Fight Club, Planet of the Apes, Big Fish, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, and lent her voice to animated movies Corpse Bride and Wallace and Gromit in The Curse of the Were-Rabbit. She made her musical debut in the big-screen version of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Best Known For: Jurassic World and being the daughter of actor and film director Ron Howard.
Early-life: Bryce was born in Los Angeles on March 2, 1981 to actress and writer Cheryl Howard and actor and film director Ron Howard. She was raised away from the Hollywood spotlight in Connecticut and she has younger twin sisters, Jocelyn and Paige, and a brother, Reed. She made her acting debut as an extra in her father's film Parenthood (1989). She went on to study at the Stella Adler Conservatory and at the New York University Tisch School of the Arts.
Career: Howard made her movie debut in Book of Love (2004). Roles followed in The Village (2004), Manderlay (2005), Lady in the Water (2006), As You Like It (2006) and Spider-Man 3 (2007). More recently, she has starred in The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (2010), The Help (2011), 50/50 (2011) and Jurassic World (2015).

Born: March 13, 1972 in Chicago, Illinois
Best Known For: His music career.
Early-life: Lonnie Rashid Lynn Jr was born on March 13, 1972 in Chicago, Illinois to Dr Mahalia Ann Hines and former basketball player Lonnie Lynn. His parents divorced when he was six years old and he was raised by his mother. He remained close to his father, however, who got him a job with the Chicago Bulls when he was a teenager. While in high school, his friends formed a rap trio that opened for such acts as N.W.A and Big Daddy Kane. He got a scholarship for Florida A&M University, where he majored in business administration.
Career: In 1992, Common released his first album, Can I Borrow A Dollar?, under the stage name Common Sense. He released his second album, Resurrection, under this name before a lawsuit forced him to change it. His rap career has seen him collaborate with Erykah Badu, De La Soul and other artists and groups. He has also won three Grammy Awards and an Oscar for Best Original Song. His Oscar-winning song, Glory, was featuring in Selma (2014), which he also co-starred in. He initially transitioned into acting in 2003, when he got his first role in the sitcom Girlfriends. His big screen debut was in Smokin' Aces (2007). Other films he has appeared in include American Gangster (2007), Wanted (2008), Terminator Salvation (2009) and Suicide Squad (2016).

Trivia: Common is also a writer. He was invited by Michelle Obama to appear at a poetry reading at the White House in 2011 and published his memoir, One Day It'll All Make Sense, in the same year.
