Mel Gibson (Actor) .. Benjamin Martin
Born: January 03, 1956 in New York
Best Known For: Being one of the biggest movie stars of all time.
Early-life: Mel Colm-cille Gerard Gibson was born on January 3, 1956, in the New York suburb of Peekskill. He is the sixth of 11 children. The family relocated to Australia when Mel was 12. He went to drama school after one of his older sisters sent in his application and fee without him knowing. He studied alongside fellow future stars Geoffrey Rush and Judy Davis and started out in low-budget movies like Summer City and Tim, before becoming a worldwide star in Mad Max.
Career: The US success of Mad Max 2 led to Gibson being offered mainstream Hollywood roles, including The Bounty, Mrs Soffel, and The River, before Lethal Weapon turned him into an A-list star in 1987. His directorial debut was 1993's The Man Without a Face, and his follow-up in front and behind the camera, Braveheart, won several Oscars. His company, Icon, has backed a string of hit-and-miss movies in recent years, including Kevin and Perry Go Large, and What Women Want. Gibson has also starred in Signs, and The Patriot, and wrote and directed controversial drama The Passion of the Christ, which Gibson himself funded. After taking a break from acting, he returned with Edge of Darkness and The Beaver.
Quote: "I'm not a done deal. I'm a work in progress. I'm still extremely flawed."
Trivia: He was the first Australian actor to be paid $1,000,000 for a film role.
Heath Ledger (Actor) .. Gabriel Martin
Born: April 04, 1979 in Perth, Australia
Best Known For: A string of mainstream and independent film hits.
Early-life: Heath Ledger was born in Perth, Australia, on April 4, 1979. He studied acting at school (the alternative was cookery). At 17, he and a friend decided to pack up and drive to Sydney, where he felt actors could get their big break. He landed some supporting roles in low-budget films and had a brief stint in Home and Away before deciding to move to America to try his luck there.
Career: Australian director Gregor Jordan auditioned him for the lead in Two Hands (1999), which he got. An in-your-face Aussie crime thriller, the film was outstanding and helped him secure a role in 10 Things I Hate About You (1999). After that, Heath feared being typecast as a teen hunk so he accepted a role in Mel Gibson historical war drama The Patriot (2000). He followed that with roles in the hugely popular A Knight's Tale (2001), the dark drama Monster's Ball (2001) and fantasy thriller The Brothers Grimm (2005). He won critical acclaim for his role as a conflicted gay cowboy in Brokeback Mountain (2005) and the Joker in The Dark Knight (2008), for which he won a posthumous Oscar. He died on January 22, 2008, at the age of 28.
Quote: "I never studied acting in Australia. I never had an empty stage and black pyjamas to run around and express myself."
Trivia: Dated Naomi Watts for a time, before falling for Brokeback Mountain co-star Michelle Williams. They had a daughter, Matilda Rose.
Jason Isaacs (Actor) .. Col William Tavington
Born: June 06, 1963 in Liverpool
Best Known For: Playing Lucius Malfoy in the Harry Potter films.
Early-life: Born into a tight-knit Jewish community in Liverpool on June 6, 1963, Jason moved at the age of 11 to London with his family; his parents later emigrated to Israel. He's the third of four children. His brothers grew up to become a lawyer, a doctor and an accountant respectively. Jason initially also studied law, but gave it up after becoming hooked on acting while at Bristol University. He went on to train at London's Central School of Speech and Drama.
Career: Isaacs' film debut came in The Tall Guy in 1989. Other early roles came in Capital City, Inspector Morse and Taggart. His first major film was 1997's Event Horizon, but it was small part in the blockbuster Armageddon a year later that cemented his position as a noteworthy actor, and he hasn't looked back since. Movie projects include The Patriot, Black Hawk Down, Divorcing Jack, Event Horizon and the Harry Potter franchise. On TV he's appeared in The West Wing, Brotherhood, Awake and Case Histories.
Quote: On the Harry Potter novels: "I suddenly understood why my friends, who I'd thought were slightly backward, had been so addicted to these children's books. They're like crack."
Trivia: His stage appearances include the National Theatre's 1993 production of Angels in America.
Joely Richardson (Actor) .. Charlotte Selton
Born: January 09, 1965 in London
Best Known For: Nip/Tuck.
Early-life: Joely Kim Richardson was born in London on January 9, 1965. She's the daughter of Vanessa Redgrave and director Tony Richardson. Acting is in her family's blood - her mother, grandfather Michael, grandmother Rachel Kempson, sister Natasha, uncle Corin, aunt Lyn and cousin Jemma all became thespians. She made her film debut at the age of three in her father's production The Charge of the Light Brigade. She attended school in California, and originally wanted to be a gymnast before entering the family 'trade'.
Career: Richardson's early films include The Hotel New Hampshire (directed by her dad), Wetherby (playing her mother as a young woman), King Ralph, and Shining Through. Controversial TV series Lady Chatterley made her famous in 1993. She went on to appear in numerous projects, such as Loch Ness, 101 Dalmatians, Event Horizon, Maybe Baby, and The Patriot before accepting a role in acclaimed US small screen hit Nip/Tuck in 2003, which made her a global household name. Her recent work includes the TV movie Wallis & Edward, The Tudors and The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.
Quote: "You grow up by making mistakes. I've made a ton of them, but as long as I keep on failing better, I don't mind."
Trivia: Richardson is a talented tennis player and flirted with the idea of becoming a professional; she attended the Harry Hopman Tennis School in Florida during her teens.
Chris Cooper (Actor) .. Col Harry Burwell
Born: July 09, 1951 in Kansas City
Best Known For: Supporting roles in a number of Hollywood films.
Early-life: Christopher W Cooper was born in Kansas City on July 9, 1951 to Mary Ann and Charles. He has an older brother, Chuck. Cooper enjoyed his first taste of acting with local community theatre group The Barn Players. He went on to study agriculture and drama at the University of Missouri.
