Early-life:
Sharlto Copley was born in Pretoria, South Africa, on November 27, 1973, to Bruce and Linda. His brother, Donovan, is the lead singer of Cape Town-based band Hotwater. Sharlto had long wanted to be an actor, but in his early 20s, he found himself working behind the camera at his TV production company in South Africa. It was at this time that he met a young Neill Blomkamp, who worked at Sharlto's company in exchange for use of the computers to pursue his talent for design.
Career:
Years later, Neil Blomkamp directed Copley in the Academy Award-nominated sci-fi movie District 9 (2009). He played the lead role of Wikus van der Merwe. A year later, he played Murdock in the feature film adaptation of The A-Team. More recently, Copley portrayed Agent Kruger in Blomkamp's Elysium (2013). Now a bona fide Hollywood actor, he has a number of movies in the pipeline.
