Billy Porter (Actor)
John Waters (Actor)
Born: April 22, 1946 in Baltimore, Maryland
Best Known For: His low-budget, unique movies.
Early-life: John Samuel Waters was born on April 22, 1946, in Baltimore, Maryland, the oldest son of conservative Catholic parents. He claims they're close, but often horrified by his behaviour. He admits being an unusual child who played truant and was described by his mother as 'an odd duck'. His gran bought him a movie camera for his 17th birthday, and he began making films with his friend Harris Glenn Milstead before briefly attending university - he was expelled for smoking marijuana.
Career: Waters' early short films gained a cult following in Baltimore during the 1960s thanks to their controversial subject matter. He eventually moved onto feature-length projects, and it was 1972's Pink Flamingos, starring Milstead (who was by then known professionally as drag artist Divine), which made his name. Female Trouble, Desperate Living and Polyester followed before Hairspray marked a move into more mainstream productions. It launched the career of Ricki Lake, and his next film, Cry-Baby, boosted Johnny Depp's profile. Since then, Waters' projects have included Serial Mom, Cecil B Demented and A Dirty Shame. He now only acts occasionally and runs lectures in film and subculture at the European Graduate School.
Quote: 'I pride myself on the fact that my work has no socially redeeming value.'
Trivia: He spends his free time attending murder trials.
Paul McCartney (Actor)
Born: June 18, 1942 in Liverpool
Best Known For: Being a member of the Beatles.
Early-life: Born James Paul McCartney on June 18, 1942, in Liverpool. His father was a part-time jazz musician who also worked as a cotton broker, and his mother, a nurse, died of breast cancer when he was 14. He has a younger brother called Michael, who was a member of folk group Scaffold. In 1957, Paul joined John Lennon's band the Quarrymen. The group evolved into the Beatles, whose line-up also included Pete Best, Stuart Sutcliffe and George Harrison. He originally intended to be a teacher, but went with the group to Hamburg instead.
Career: The band returned to Liverpool - minus Sutcliffe, who later died of a brain haemorrhage - where local businessman Brian Epstein became their manager. Producer George Martin signed them to EMI and the group replaced Best with a new drummer, Ringo Starr. The Beatles took the world by storm, becoming one of the most successful acts in pop history, before acrimoniously splitting in 1970. McCartney formed the group Wings with first wife Linda and has since embarked on various solo projects, with mixed critical and commercial results. He was knighted in 1997 and continues to perform live and record.
Quote: 'One of my biggest thrills is still sitting down with a guitar or a piano and just out of nowhere trying to make a song happen.'
Trivia: As a solo artist, McCartney has sold more than 100 million records.
Mick Jagger (Actor)
Born: July 26, 1943 in Dartford, Kent
Best Known For: Being a Rolling Stone.
Early-life: Born Michael Philip Jagger in Dartford, Kent. on July 26, 1943. His father, Basil, was a PE teacher and later a lecturer. His mother, Eva, was a hairdresser. He first became friends with Keith Richards at primary school thanks to their mutual love of music, but they later lost touch. He formed his first band, Little Boy Blue and the Blue Boys, while still a teenager. A chance meeting with Richards on a train led him to join the band in 1960.
Career: The classic Rolling Stones line-up of Jagger, Richards, Brian Jones, Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts was in place by May 1963 when they signed their first recording deal. They were a success by 1964, although their wild behaviour didn't endear them to the media. Despite numerous personnel changes and Jones's death in 1969, the band are still going strong. Jagger has also recorded solo projects with mixed results. He began acting in 1970 in cult movie Performance, and has also appeared in Ned Kelly (1970), Bent (1997) and Freejack (1992). He produced the film Enigma in 2001 and was knighted a year later. He is still the oldest swinger in town.
Quote: 'It's all right letting yourself go as long as you can let yourself back.'
Trivia: He enjoys watching cricket.
Tom Jones (Actor)
Born: June 07, 1940 in Trefforest, Pontypridd, South Wales
Best Known For: Thumping renditions of classic songs.
Early-life: Born Thomas John Woodward on June 7, 1940, in Treforest, Pontypridd, south Wales, the son of a housewife and a coal miner. He enjoyed singing, and performed with the Treforest Secondary Modern School choir. He left school, married his girlfriend Melinda (better known now as Linda) Trenchard and had a son - all by the age of 17. To make ends meet, Jones worked as a labourer, glove cutter, paper miller and vacuum cleaner salesman, singing at night with local bands.
Career: In 1963, Jones joined forces with songwriter Gordon Mills, who was beginning a career in management. A year later, his single, It's Not Unusual, written by Mills, topped the chart. Other early hits include She's a Lady, Help Yourself, Delilah, What's New Pussycat? and Without Love. His record sales waned during the 1970s, but he made a successful comeback in 1987, scoring a top 10 hit with The Boy from Nowhere. These days he's as popular as ever and his 1999 best-selling album, Reload, featured duets with some of the world's biggest contemporary acts, including Robbie Williams and Stereophonics. He continues to be one of the most successful recording artists in the world. He was knighted in 2006, and has been a judge on The Voice since 2012.
Quote: 'The fire is still in me. Not to be an oldie, but a goodie. I want to be a contender.'
Trivia: While filming an alien invasion during Mars Attacks! he burnt part of his scalp. He stopped dying his hair in 2009.
