Early-life:
Lisa Edelstein was born on May 21, 1966, in Boston, Massachusetts. Her parents are Alvin and Bonnie Edelstein. Her father was a paediatrician in New Jersey. She was raised in Wayne, New Jersey, where she attended Wayne Valley High School. She moved to New York at the age of 18 to study theatre at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts. While living in New York, she became involved in the club scene and was dubbed `Queen of Downtown" by writer James St James.
Career:
After being dubbed a `celebutante" by New York Times during her club scene days, Edelstein used her celebrity status to write, compose and star in a musical called Positive Me in response to the growing Aids crisis of the 1980s. After a brief stint hosting a show on MTV in 1990, she spent the early part of the decade appearing in guest roles on several sitcoms, including Mad About You, The Larry Sanders Show and Seinfeld. She played the lesbian sister in 1996 on ABC's Relativity, a high-priced call girl in 1999 on The West Wing and a male-to-female transsexual in 2000 on Ally McBeal. Further guest star spots followed until she was cast in 2004 as Dr Lisa Cuddy on Fox medical drama House.
