Early-life:
John Scot Barrowman was born in Glasgow on March 11, 1967. His family relocated to Illinois in America when he was eight. While still in Scotland, he would stand on the counter of his mum's record shop and sing songs, but he got the acting bug during his teens. After landing the role of Barnaby in a college production of Hello Dolly, he decided to pursue his dream of performing. He honed his singing and acting abilities while working at a theme park, before getting his big break in a production of Anything Goes, starring alongside Elaine Paige.
Career:
Barrowman built up a steady stream of roles in musicals, from Miss Saigon to Evita. On the small screen, he landed a job presenting Live & Kicking on BBC One, as well as fronting shows such as Electric Circus, The Movie Game and 5's Company. The exposure brought him to the attention of American producers and he returned to the US for various projects. Barrowman then concentrated on a one-man cabaret show, which brought him back to the UK, and featured in big-screen offering De-Lovely, before landing the role of Captain Jack Harkness in Doctor Who and its spin-off Torchwood. Other TV projects include Desperate Housewives and Arrow. Away from acting, he's appeared on Dancing on Ice, has recorded several CDs, been a judge on Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical talent hunts, and fronted Tonight's the Night and Pressure Pad.
