Early-life:
Melanie Janine Brown was born in Leeds on May 29, 1975. She studied performing arts at Intake High School in Leeds. She started her music career in a girl band called Touch, which went on to become known as the Spice Girls.
Career:
On June 7, 1996, the Spice Girls released their debut single, Wannabe. It reached number one in 29 countries. It was followed by nine further number one singles from their albums Spice, Spiceworld, and Forever. Mel's nickname within the group was Scary Spice. Mel released her debut solo album, Hot, in November 2000, a month before the Spice Girls' final album, Forever, was released. The girls took a break from the Spice Girls in December 2000 to concentrate on their solo careers. Since then, Mel has presented a number of shows, including This Is My Moment, and Miss Universe 2008, and appeared as a judge on The X Factor Australia, America's Got Talent, and Stepping Out. The Spice Girls reunited for a one-off tour in 2007, and performed at the London 2012 Olympic closing ceremony. She joined the judging panel of the UK version of The X Factor in 2014.
