Tom Cruise (Actor) .. Jerry Maguire
Born: July 03, 1962 in New York
Best Known For: His blockbusting movies.
Early-life: Thomas Cruise Mapother IV was born in New York on July 3, 1962. His mother was a teacher, his father, whom Cruise later described as "abusive", was an electrical engineer. He has three sisters. Cruise spent part of his childhood in Canada before returning to the US after his parents separated. While at high school, Tom caught the acting bug and abandoned his plans to enter the priesthood. At the age of 18, he returned to New York, where he landed his first film role in Endless Love.
Career: Within five years of his big-screen debut, Cruise was one of the hottest actors of his generation, having starred in the likes of Risky Business and Top Gun. The likes of Rain Man, The Color of Money, Interview with the Vampire and Days of Thunder followed. He has also turned his hand to producing and made the smart move of taking a share of several of his film's profits, making him one of the highest-paid actors in Hollywood. Recent hits include Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, Jack Reacher, Oblivion and Edge of Tomorrow. He has been Oscar-nominated three times, for his performances in Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire and Magnolia, but has yet to win. His next major film is Mission: Impossible 5.
Quote: "I believe in life. I know that life comes in at your heart and it doesn't matter if you're an actor, a film-maker or a gentleman on the street, it comes at you."
Trivia: Cruise was awarded The Legend of Our Lifetime at the 2014 Empire Awards.
Renee Zellweger (Actor) .. Dorothy Boyd
Born: April 25, 1969 in Houston, Texas
Best Known For: Bridget Jones
Early-life: Renee Kathleen Zellweger was born on April 25, 1969, in Houston, Texas. Her father, Emil, is a Swiss-born electrical engineer who worked in the oil refinery business, while her Norwegian mother is a nurse who moved to America to work as a governess. Zellweger graduated from the University of Texas with a degree in English literature in 1991. She caught the acting bug at university, where she took drama classes to gain the necessary grades to graduate. After finishing her studies, Renee worked as a waitress to make ends meet, before landing a role in a beer commercial.
Career: After starring in Ben Stiller's directorial debut Reality Bites and Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation, Renee became a household name after starring as Tom Cruise's love interest in Jerry Maguire. In 2001, she beat many home-grown actresses to star in the lead role in Bridget Jones' Diary and its sequel Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason, despite being neither British nor chubby. She was nominated for an Academy Award in 2002. She received another nomination the following year for her performance in Chicago, before picking up the Best Supporting actress award in 2004 for her role in Cold Mountain. Her other notable film credits include Me Myself and Irene, Appaloosa and Cinderella Man. More recently, she has appeared in Miss Potter, Bee Movie, Monsters vs Aliens and My Own Love Song.
Quote: Speaking about starring as Bridget Jones: "It was an acting challenge, the only thing hard about it was being away from home and loved ones and leaving the dog behind."
Trivia: She gained 20lbs for her role in Bridget Jones's Diary.
Cuba Gooding Jr (Actor) .. Rod Tidwell
Born: January 02, 1968 in The Bronx, New York
Best Known For: His Oscar-winning performance in Jerry Maguire.
Early-life: Cuba M Gooding Jr was born on January 2, 1968, in The Bronx, New York, the son of singers Shirley and Cuba Sr. He has two brothers, vocalist Tommy and fellow actor Omar. Gooding's father moved the family to Los Angeles in 1972, but left them shortly afterwards, and the children were raised by their mother alone. Gooding Jr got his first professional break as a dancer, and performed with Lionel Richie at the closing ceremony of the 1984 Olympic Games.
Career: Bitten by the acting bug, Gooding Jr landed roles on TV shows such as Hill Street Blues and MacGyver in the late 1980s. In 1991, he landed a part in the film Boyz n the Hood, and it launched him on the road to stardom. Small but important roles in the likes of A Few Good Men and Lightning Jack led to bigger parts in Outbreak and Losing Isaiah. However, it was the 1996 smash Jerry Maguire, which saw him win a Best Supporting Actor Oscar, that really put him on the map. Since then, his career has been patchy, with movies such as Pearl Harbor and Rat Race alongside meatier fare such as As Good As It Gets and American Gangster. He continues to be an in-demand actor.
Quote: "I have never made a decision based on race and never will. I am admiring of my fellow peers, black film-makers and black actors and actresses. When Halle and Denzel won Oscars, I felt pride because I was black, but never did I analyse their win based on colour."
Trivia: In 2013, Gooding Jr made his Broadway debut in The Trip to Bountiful.
