Early-life:
David Stephen Caruso was born on January 7, 1956, in Forest Hills, New York. His Italian father Charles was a newspaper editor who left the family home when Caruso was 18 months old. His Irish mother Joan was a librarian. He has a younger sister, Joyce, who is a TV producer. Caruso was a tough, street-wise kid who struggled to gain good acting roles early in his career, making ends meet by appearing in police line-ups.
Career:
Caruso first appeared on TV in the mid-1970s in a commercial. In 1976, he landed a lead role in TV series Archie, but was replaced before shooting began. His first film was Without Warning in 1980, and he worked on stage off-Broadway before landing a semi-regular part in Hill Street Blues in 1981. He had a small role in An Officer and a Gentleman, First Blood and Twins before hitting the big time with NYPD Blue in 1993. He quit a year later to concentrate on films, none of which were particularly successful. In 1997, he returned to TV in short-lived law drama Michael Hayes. He played Lt Horatio Caine in CSI: Miami from 2002 until 2012.
