William Shatner (Actor) .. Capt James T Kirk
Born: March 22, 1931 in Quebec, Canada
Best Known For: Playing Captain Kirk in Star Trek.
Early-life: William Alan Shatner was born on March 22, 1931, in Quebec, Canada. His father was a clothing manufacturer. William attended Verdun High School and gained a Bachelor of Commerce degree from McGill University in Montreal. He was raised in a Jewish household and claims he was the victim of anti-semitism while growing up. After catching the acting bug he moved to New York in 1956, initially working on live TV dramas. He also understudied for Christopher Plummer in a stage production of Henry V.
Career: Shatner spent years as a jobbing actor, appearing in such movies as The Brothers Karamazov and The Intruder, as well as The Twilight Zone TV series before Star Trek made him a household name in 1966. He played Captain Kirk for three years before the show was cancelled, then appeared in numerous TV shows and movies before Star Trek: The Motion Picture relaunched his career in 1979. He starred as Kirk in six more films before the character was finally killed off in 1994. He has also featured in TJ Hooker, Free Enterprise and Miss Congeniality and its sequel. Shatner returned to TV in 2004 in the series Boston Legal. In 2010, he starred in his first sitcom, $#*! My Dad Says. Away from showbusiness, he's written several sci-fi novels, recorded a number of much-criticised albums and is a champion horse breeder.
Quote: On his most famous character: "We were basically one and the same, although Kirk was just about perfect, and, of course, I am perfect."
Trivia: In 2005, Shatner won a Golden Globe for his role on Boston Legal. He has also released several albums featuring his unique versions of popular songs.
Leonard Nimoy (Actor) .. Mr Spock
Born: March 26, 1931 in Boston, Massachusetts
Best Known For: Mr Spock, of course.
Early-life: Leonard Simon Nimoy was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on March 26, 1931, the second son of Ukrainian immigrants. He came from a poor family (his father was a barber) and was raised in a tenement building. He began acting at the age of eight, making his stage debut in Hansel and Gretel. He appeared in amateur productions until he graduated from high school at 18, when he moved to California in an effort to get his professional career off the ground.
Career: After small roles in two little-seen films, Nimoy landed the lead in the 1952 movie Kid Monk Baroni. He appeared briefly in cult classic Them! before spending two years in the US Army. When he returned to acting, he supplemented his income with odd jobs. His big break came in 1965 when Gene Roddenberry offered him the part of Mr Spock in the TV series Star Trek. When the show ended, he starred in the TV series Mission: Impossible and various long-forgotten movies and TV shows. From 1979 onwards, he returned to play Mr Spock in various projects and turned to directing, making Three Men and a Baby in 1987. He died on February 27, 2015, at the age of 83.
Quote: "My attitude is, let the chips fall where they may."
Trivia: Nimoy was a keen photographer.
DeForest Kelley (Actor) .. Dr Leonard `Bones" McCoy
Grace Lee Whitney (Actor) .. Yeoman Janice Rand
Nichelle Nichols (Actor) .. Lt Cdr Nyota Uhura
George Takei (Actor) .. Sulu
Born: April 20, 1937 in Los Angeles
Best Known For: Playing Mr Sulu in Star Trek.
Early-life: George Hosato Takei was born in Los Angeles on April 20, 1937. He grew up in a US internment camp after the Second World War. He attended Mount Vernon Junior High School and Los Angeles High School. After graduating he studied architecture at the University of California at Berkeley. He also studied at the University of California Los Angeles, where he received a BA in theatre in 1960 and an MA in Theatre four years later. He honed his craft in Emmy-winning series Playhouse 90 and alongside such greats as Richard Burton in Ice Palace (1960), and Cary Grant in Walk Don't Run (1966). He also appeared in the first series of Mission: Impossible and the Jerry Lewis comedies The Big Mouth (1967) and Which Way To the Front? (1970).
Career: Takei's big break came in 1965 when he was cast as Hikaru Sulu in the second pilot episode for Gene Roddenberry's series Star Trek. He was due to have a bigger role in the series but filming on The Green Berets (1968) meant the character Pavel Chekov was brought in to share helmsman duties. They eventually ended up sharing the bridge in one of the world's most successful sci-fi shows. After the series was cancelled, Takei became a regular on the convention circuit, eventually returning with the rest of the cast for Star Trek: The Motion Picture in 1979. Five films later, he officially hung up Sulu's uniform for good, but did return for a fan-based internet series. Other roles have included 3rd Rock From the Sun, Heroes, the film Prisoners of the Sun (1990) and Will and Grace. He also came third in the 2008 season of I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!
Quote: "Science fiction has endless possibilities and I too am very much intrigued as to what Sulu would now be doing."
Trivia: Asteroid 7307 Takei is named in his honour.
