Early-life: Born Robert De Niro Jr on August 17, 1943, in New York to artists Virginia and Robert De Niro Sr. They divorced when he was three. De Niro studied at the Little Red School House and the High School of Music and Art, but left high school at 16 to study acting at the Stella Adler Conservatory and the American Workshop - he'd been hooked on becoming an actor after playing the Cowardly Lion in a school production of The Wizard of Oz at the age of 10.
Career: De Niro made a handful of films in the 1960s and early 1970s, but it wasn't until 1973's Bang the Drum Slowly and Mean Streets (his first collaboration with Martin Scorsese) that his career took off. He received an Oscar for The Godfather Part II a year later and was nominated Academy Awards for Taxi Driver and The Deer Hunter, and took home his second Oscar for Raging Bull. The King of Comedy, Once Upon A Time in America, Brazil, The Mission, Angel Heart and The Untouchables followed. Over the past few decades, De Niro has made crowd pleasers such as Cape Fear, Casino, Heat, Meet the Parents and Analyze This, as well as directing A Bronx Tale and The Good Shepherd. He gave a fabulous comic performance in the fantasy movie Stardust, before starring alongside fellow big-screen icon Al Pacino in cop thriller Righteous Kill. His more recent films have included Silver Linings Playbook and The Family.

Trivia: De Niro has also been instrumental in the revival of Manhattan's TriBeCa district; not only has he invested in the area, he helped found its film festival in 2002.

Best Known For: Prince of Tides and 48 Hours.
Early-life: Nicholas King Nolte was born in Omaha, Nebraska, on February 8, 1941 and began his career on stage at the Pasadena Playhouse and in regional theatre productions. His key role was in the TV miniseries 'Rich Man, Poor Man' (1976). In 1979, he nearly landed the leading role in Apocalypse Now, but narrowly missed out, as he did with the Han Solo role in Star Wars.
Career: Nolte's movie breakthrough was in 1982 action comedy 48 Hours. He followed this up with critically-acclaimed vehicles like Down and Out in Beverly Hills and Three Fugitives. He gave more serious performances in the The Prince of Tides and Cape Fear. He has been Oscar-nominated three times, and performances in dark dramas like Affliction have been critically-acclaimed. He gave a superb turn in short-lived HBO racing drama Luck.
Quote: 'I've made a lot of mistakes and I don't regret any of them. Sometimes that's the only way you learn.'
Trivia: He gained 50 pounds for his role in Q&A (1990).

Best Known For: Cape Fear
Early-life: Born June 23, 1973, in Los Angeles. She is one of actor Geoffrey Lewis's 10 children. Her mother is a graphic designer. She knew she wanted to act from an early age, and began gaining professional work at 12. Having to attend school and parental pressure meant she had to turn down lots of roles, so she became legally emancipated at 14, which meant she was free of child labour laws and could accept acting jobs. She eventually completing her school exams with help from a tutor.
Career: Lewis's TV debut came in TV movie Home Fires in 1987, and later the same year she had a recurring role in the series I Married Dora. Her first film was 1988's My Stepmother is an Alien. Projects such as National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation, Too Young to Die? and A Family for Joe followed. She had a Best Supporting Actress Oscar nomination in 1991 for Cape Fear. She's since appeared in Husbands and Wives, Kalifornia, Romeo is Bleeding, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Natural Born Killers, Strange Days, From Dusk Till Dawn and Starsky & Hutch.

Gregory Peck (Actor) .. Lee Heller
Born: April 05, 1916 in La Jolla, California
Best Known For: Being a Hollywood icon.
Early-life: Eldred Gregory Peck was born in La Jolla, California, on April 5, 1916. His parents divorced when he was six and he spent a number of years being raised by his maternal grandmother. He spent a year at San Diego State Teacher's College (now known as San Diego State University), where he took theatre and public-speaking courses, before going to the University of California, Berkeley. He developed an interest in acting at Berkeley.
Career: After graduating from Berkeley, Peck went to New York to study at the Neighborhood Playhouse. To make ends meet, he worked at the 1939 World's Fair and as a tour guide for NBC at Radio City Music Hall. He made his Broadway debut in 1942 as the lead in The Morning Star. He was in high demand as an actor during the Second World War as he was exempt from military service due to a back injury. In 1947, he co-founded The La Jolla Playhouse with Mel Ferrer and Dorothy McGuire. Peck's first film, Days of Glory, was released in 1944. He received Academy Award nominations for The Keys of the Kingdom (1944), The Yearling (1946), Gentleman's Agreement (1947) and Twelve O'Clock High (1949). He went on to win an Oscar for his performance as Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird (1962). Among his other films were Spellbound (1945), Moby Dick (1956), The Guns of Navarone (1961), Roman Holiday (1953), The Omen (1976), MacArthur (1977), The Boys from Brazil (1978) and Other People's Money (1991). Peck died in his sleep on June 12, 2003 at the age of 87.

Trivia: Peck was the first native Californian to win an Academy Award for Best Actor. He was a lifelong opponent of nuclear weapons.
