Cuba Gooding Jr (Actor) .. Chief Carl Brashear
Born: January 02, 1968 in The Bronx, New York
Best Known For: His Oscar-winning performance in Jerry Maguire.
Early-life: Cuba M Gooding Jr was born on January 2, 1968, in The Bronx, New York, the son of singers Shirley and Cuba Sr. He has two brothers, vocalist Tommy and fellow actor Omar. Gooding's father moved the family to Los Angeles in 1972, but left them shortly afterwards, and the children were raised by their mother alone. Gooding Jr got his first professional break as a dancer, and performed with Lionel Richie at the closing ceremony of the 1984 Olympic Games.
Career: Bitten by the acting bug, Gooding Jr landed roles on TV shows such as Hill Street Blues and MacGyver in the late 1980s. In 1991, he landed a part in the film Boyz n the Hood, and it launched him on the road to stardom. Small but important roles in the likes of A Few Good Men and Lightning Jack led to bigger parts in Outbreak and Losing Isaiah. However, it was the 1996 smash Jerry Maguire, which saw him win a Best Supporting Actor Oscar, that really put him on the map. Since then, his career has been patchy, with movies such as Pearl Harbor and Rat Race alongside meatier fare such as As Good As It Gets and American Gangster. He continues to be an in-demand actor.
Quote: "I have never made a decision based on race and never will. I am admiring of my fellow peers, black film-makers and black actors and actresses. When Halle and Denzel won Oscars, I felt pride because I was black, but never did I analyse their win based on colour."
Trivia: In 2013, Gooding Jr made his Broadway debut in The Trip to Bountiful.
Robert De Niro (Actor) .. Chief Sunday
Born: August 17, 1943 in New York
Best Known For: His films with Martin Scorsese.
Early-life: Born Robert De Niro Jr on August 17, 1943, in New York to artists Virginia and Robert De Niro Sr. They divorced when he was three. De Niro studied at the Little Red School House and the High School of Music and Art, but left high school at 16 to study acting at the Stella Adler Conservatory and the American Workshop - he'd been hooked on becoming an actor after playing the Cowardly Lion in a school production of The Wizard of Oz at the age of 10.
Career: De Niro made a handful of films in the 1960s and early 1970s, but it wasn't until 1973's Bang the Drum Slowly and Mean Streets (his first collaboration with Martin Scorsese) that his career took off. He received an Oscar for The Godfather Part II a year later and was nominated Academy Awards for Taxi Driver and The Deer Hunter, and took home his second Oscar for Raging Bull. The King of Comedy, Once Upon A Time in America, Brazil, The Mission, Angel Heart and The Untouchables followed. Over the past few decades, De Niro has made crowd pleasers such as Cape Fear, Casino, Heat, Meet the Parents and Analyze This, as well as directing A Bronx Tale and The Good Shepherd. He gave a fabulous comic performance in the fantasy movie Stardust, before starring alongside fellow big-screen icon Al Pacino in cop thriller Righteous Kill. His more recent films have included Silver Linings Playbook and The Family.
Quote: "I think Hollywood has a class system. The actors are like the inmates, but the truth is they're running the asylum."
Trivia: De Niro has also been instrumental in the revival of Manhattan's TriBeCa district; not only has he invested in the area, he helped found its film festival in 2002.
Charlize Theron (Actor) .. Gwen Sunday
Born: August 07, 1975 in Benoni, South Africa
Best Known For: Her Oscar win for Monster.
Early-life: Born on August 7, 1975, in Benoni, South Africa. She was named after her father, Charles, who died when she was 15 after her mother shot him in an act of self-defence. At 16, Theron won a one-year modelling contract and moved to Europe with her mother. She later trained as a ballerina, but a knee injury ended her dance career. She then decided to switch to acting, and moved to Los Angeles.
Career: An agent spotted Theron arguing with a bank clerk and signed her on the spot. After eight months of acting lessons she landed her first role, a non-speaking part in Children of the Corn III. A more significant role in 2 Days in the Valley followed. Tom Hanks cast her in That Thing You Do! in 1996, and she hasn't looked back, appearing in hits such as The Devil's Advocate, Mighty Joe Young, and Reindeer Games. In 2003, she starred in the remake of The Italian Job and critically acclaimed drama Monster; her performance in the latter won her an Oscar. She also starred in The Life and Death of Peter Sellers, Aeon Flux, Hancock, The Road, Young Adult, Snow White & the Huntsman and Prometheus.
Quote: "Looks alone won't get you that far. It may get you in the door, but there's always somebody younger, somebody prettier. You have to rely on something else."
Trivia: In 2010, Theron co-presented the draw for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in Cape Town.
Hal Holbrook (Actor) .. Mr Pappy
Michael Rapaport (Actor) .. Snowhill
Born: March 20, 1970 in New York
Best Known For: The War at Home.
Early-life: Michael David Rapaport was born on March 20, 1970, in New York. He is the son of radio personality June Brody and radio station manager David Rapaport. As a youth, he idolised some of the Big Apple's most famous actors, such as Robert De Niro and Christopher Walken. Disinterested in high school, he was eventually expelled before moving to LA to try his hand at being a stand-up comedian. He had minor success as a live comic, but soon switched to a career in front of the camera and started to concentrate on acting.
Career: After a guest spot on TV show China Beach, offers of film work began coming in. Among Rapaport's early credits are indie film Zebrahead, The Assassin, which starred Bridget Fonda, and Poetic Justice, which featured Janet Jackson and Tupac Shakur. Since then, the actor has managed to work on both the small and silver screen, with appearances in dramas such as NYPD Blue and ER, and films like Woody Allen vehicle Mighty Aphrodite, Cop Land, Deep Blue Sea, Dr Doolittle 2 and Hitch among many others. In 2005, he was cast as Dave Gold in sitcom The War at Home, which ran for two seasons. His recent work includes Live Free or Die, My Name Is Earl, Prison Break, A Day in the Life, and Accidentally on Purpose.
Quote: "Making a character human is important, not likable or unlikable, just well-rounded."
Trivia: As a youngster, he was a die-hard fan of Eddie Murphy and got to work with his idol in the film Metro (1997) and on Dr. Dolittle 2 (2001).
