Anthony Andrews (Actor) .. Tony Browne
Born: January 12, 1948 in London
Best Known For: Brideshead Revisited.
Early-life: Anthony Corin Gerald Andrews was born in London on January 12, 1948. His father, a musical arranger and composer, died when he was five, leaving his mother, a dancer, to raise five children alone. Money was scarce, and he and his siblings did household chores and the shopping while their mother did odd jobs to make ends meet. He attended Bushey's Royal Masonic School, where he claims he was an academic disaster. After leaving, he worked in farming, catering, and as a newspaper's advertising agent.
Career: In 1967, Andrews joined the Chichester Festival Theatre as stage manager, before spending 18 months appearing alongside John Gielgud in Alan Bennett's Forty Years On, an experience he believes was invaluable. He then spent several years touring the country in various productions, and gaining experience in films and TV, with small roles in such projects as A Day Out, QB VII, and Upstairs Downstairs. His part in miniseries Danger UXB led to him landing a leading role in Brideshead Revisited in 1981. Since then, he's appeared in The Scarlet Pimpernel, The Holcroft Covenant, David Copperfield, Love in a Cold Climate, and The King's Speech. He's also dabbled in producing.
Quote: 'I hope I carry on both acting and producing in the future. I was never good at sitting at home waiting for the phone to ring, so I've tended to go out and stir the pudding.'
Trivia: Andrews won a Golden Globe and a Bafta TV Award for his role in Brideshead Revisited.
