Born: September 10, 1968 in Hatfield, Hertfordshire
Best Known For: Directing Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.
Early-life: Born Guy Stuart Ritchie in Hatfield, Hertfordshire on September 10, 1968. His mother Amber, a model, and father John, who worked in advertising, divorced when he was five. Ritchie grew up largely at Loton Park in Shropshire, the 17th-century home of his stepfather, Sir Michael Leighton. His mother divorced again when he was 12. His severe dyslexia caused him to move schools several times, eventually leaving with one GCE in film studies.
Career: Ritchie was inspired to become a director after seeing Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, but landed his first job at Island Records. During this period he admits to having known criminals, without becoming one himself, and received the scar on the left side of his face. At 25 he decided to move into films, originally becoming a runner, then directing commercials and pop videos. His short film The Hard Case was well received. He formed a partnership with producer Matthew Vaughn, which led to his first movie Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, which he also wrote. Ritchie then made the successful Snatch. Sadly, his follow-ups, Swept Away and Revolver, haven't fared as well. He returned to form in 2008 with RocknRolla and the hugely successful 2009 release Sherlock Holmes and its 2011 sequel A Game of Shadows.
Quote: "I got into film-making because I was interested in making entertaining movies, which I felt there was a lack of."
