Brenda Blethyn (Actor) .. DCI Vera Stanhope
Born: February 20, 1946 in Kent
Best Known For: Secrets & Lies.
Early-life: Born Brenda Anne Bottle on February 20, 1946, in Ramsgate, Kent. She's the youngest of nine children of a parlour maid and a chauffeur. Money was tight when she was growing up. After excelling at maths at school, she worked as a secretary and bookkeeper in a bank. But she was always obsessed with films and acting and, at the age of 27, after divorcing her first husband, she gave up her day job and used her savings to fund a drama course at Guildford. She didn't tell her parents, and thought she would go back to her old career if things didn't work out.
Career: Blethyn gained early experience with two small theatre groups before joining the National Theatre in 1975. Her TV debut was in a 1979 episode of Tales of the Unexpected, and a year later she had a lead role in Mike Leigh's small-screen project Gloria. In 1990 she made her first film, The Witches, following that up with A River Runs Through It. Despite roles in Outside Edge and The Buddha of Suburbia, she didn't become a household name until her Oscar-nominated role in Leigh's Secrets & Lies. Since then she's starred in Girls' Night, Saving Grace, Pride & Prejudice, Atonement, London River, and gained another Oscar nomination for Little Voice. She returned to the small screen in 2011 playing the title role in ITV's detective series Vera.
Quote: 'I don't have ambition. My expectations are low.'
Trivia: Blethyn was awarded an OBE for services to drama in the 2003 New Year Honours List.
David Leon (Actor) .. DI Joe Ashworth
Best Known For: Vera.
Early-life: David Jeremy Leon was born in 1980 in Newcastle upon Tyne to Ann and Anthony. As a teenager, Leon was on the books of Blackburn Rovers, but they released him when he was 19. He turned to acting and successfully auditioned for the National Youth Theatre. He dropped out of drama school to shoot the film Alexander (2004) with Oliver Stone in Morocco. In 2006, he had a main role in the film These Foolish Things (2006).
Career: Leon went on to star in the miniseries The Wild West, RocknRolla (2008) and Walking with the Enemy (2013). Between 2011 and 2014, he starred alongside Brenda Blethyn in ITV drama Vera, playing DS Joe Ashworth.
Quote: 'You can't get away with enjoying acting in a working-class environment.'
Trivia: Leon's short film Orthodox was accepted into several international film festivals. He completed a feature length version of Orthodox in 2015.

Shobna Gulati (Actor) .. Chief Superintendent Khalon
Born: August 07, 1966 in Oldham
Best Known For: Coronation Street.
Early-life: Born August 7, 1966, in Oldham, Lancashire. Her father was a doctor. She has two older sisters and a younger brother. As a child, Shobna wanted to be a vet, but became hooked on acting and dancing (she's trained in a classic Indian style) thanks to appearances with amateur groups. Despite this, she studied Arabic and Middle Eastern politics at university. She can also speak six languages. While dancing in a show at the Theatre Royal Stratford East in London, she was spotted by an agent who urged her to become a professional actress.
Career: Gulati's first TV appearance was in a 1999 edition of Hetty Wainthropp Investigates, playing the small role of a cafe assistant. Her big break came when she landed the part of simple-minded but sweet-natured canteen worker Anita, in Victoria Wood's sitcom dinnerladies. A short stint in EastEnders and a Bafta-winning short film, Shadowscan, followed before she was cast as Sunita in Coronation Street in 2001. A spell away from the soap saw her join the cast of Where the Heart Is. She's also appeared on Have I Got News For You, Call My Bluff and Soapstar Superstar, as well as in numerous stage productions.
Quote: 'I'm not afraid of anything.'
Trivia: Since 2013, Gulati has appeared as a regular panelist on Loose Women.
Cathy Tyson (Actor) .. Kath Olivier
Derek Thompson (Actor) .. Gordon Spencer
Born: April 04, 1948 in Belfast
Best Known For: Playing nurse boss Charlie Fairhead in Casualty.
Early-life: Born in Belfast on April 4, 1948. He began his showbusiness career at the age of 10 in a close harmony group with his twin sister Elaine (she is 10 minutes younger than him). The siblings then went on a roadshow touring the variety theatres of Britain and landed a record deal, eventually having a hit with One Little Robin in a Cherry Tree when they were 12. They appeared in the 1965 film Gonks Go Beat and formed a trio called Odin's People with Larry Johns. Derek decided to concentrate on acting at the age of 19.
Career: Thompson got a job as a stage manager and went on to do repertory and fringe theatre. His first professional role was in Romeo and Juliet at the Ludlow Festival and he made his TV debut in the police series Softly, Softly. Other early work included roles in The Gentle Touch, The Long Good Friday and Yanks. Although his main love has always been the stage, he was delighted at being offered the part of Charlie in Casualty. First appearing in 1986, he is the longest-serving actor in the show and has faced many emotional scenes and delicate issues. His famous alter ego has crossed over into sister show Holby City, and in the short-lived spin-off series HolbyBlue.
Quote: 'Playing Charlie for as long as I have means it's hard to tell what parts of me have become part of his personality.'
Trivia: A keen swimmer, Thompson also loves sailing and taking long walks.
