Action from heat one, held at California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento, where reigning champion Tom Stoltman of Great Britain was among the participants. In a brand-new format all 25 men competed across five groups and five events, where performances in the group stage counted towards the outcome. After the five events are completed, the 10 finalists have their performances in each event rated against each other, giving them a points score from 1-10 relative to which of the finalists performed best in the group stage.
