Early-life:
Lesley was born in Thorne, near Doncaster, South Yorkshire, on April 10, 1955. She was raised in a ramshackle cottage. Her dad, who had a musical streak, was a railway signalman and later an infant school headmaster. Her family often held sing-songs around the piano. On leaving school, she spent six years as a student at the Royal Academy of Music in London, where her contemporaries included Annie Lennox, and made ends meet posing as an artist's model.
Career:
Garrett's early career included stints at the Welsh National Opera and Opera North before she joined the English National Opera, where she has enjoyed regular work ever since. The singer has also notched up a string of hit records and performances at sell-out concerts across the world. Her career was once threatened when she lost her voice, but she has bounced back to huge acclaim. Regular appearances on TV, including in the first series of Strictly Come Dancing and her own show, Lesley Garrett Tonight, have made her a household name.
