Early-life:
Born November 21, 1952, in Santa Monica, California. The elder of two children from her mother's third marriage to producer Sidney Luft. Has a younger brother, Joey, and her half-sister is Liza Minnelli. Before her parents' divorce in 1965 she claims to have been unaware of her mother's drug problem, but after it became her carer, administering the medication she needed to function. Eventually, the stress proved too much and Luft had a breakdown.
Career:
Made her professional debut on The Judy Garland Show in 1963. After studying at the Banff School of Fine Arts she began appearing in numerous Broadway shows, including Mame, Grease and The Boy Friend. Concert and theatre tours, most recently Songs My Mother Taught Me, a celebration of Garland's work. On TV Luft has starred in MASH spin-off Trapper John MD, as well as guest appearances in McCloud, Murder, She Wrote and The Twilight Zone. Films include 54 and My Giant.
