Best Known For:
Playing Det Andy Sipowicz in NYPD Blue.
Early-life:
Born Dennis Franz Schlacta on October 28, 1944, in Maywood, a suburb of Chicago. His father was a German immigrant, and both parents worked for the US postal service. He has two older sisters. After graduating from Southern Illinois University he was drafted into the Army and served 11 months in Vietnam, an experience that affected him psychologically for some time afterwards. He took up a number of jobs to make ends meet before turning to acting in 1972.
Career:
At an audition, Dennis met director Robert Altman, who persuaded him to move to Los Angeles, where he soon began picking up regular work. He made his movie debut in 1978's The Fury, following it up with such forgettable productions as A Wedding, Stony Island and A Perfect Couple. He appeared to have landed his breakthrough role in Altman's Popeye in 1980, but it was a huge flop, and he had to wait another five years before becoming a star thanks to a regular role in TV drama Hill Street Blues. He went on to appear in The Player (another Altman movie) and Die Hard 2. Dennis was a founding cast member of NYPD Blue in 1993 and stayed with the show until it ended in 2005. He won four Emmy Awards for his work on the series, and between runs made appearances in films such as City of Angels and American Buffalo.
