Alun Armstrong (Actor) .. Mr Evans
Born: July 17, 1946 in Annfield Plain, near Stanley, Co Durham
Best Known For: New Tricks.
Early-life: Alun Armstrong was born in Annfield Plain, near Stanley, Co Durham, on July 17, 1946. His father was from Cumberland and his mother was from Co Durham. He attended Consett Grammar School before going to Newcastle University. Unhappy in academia, he took a job as a gravedigger, where a colleague managed to get him an interview for a behind-the-scenes job with a theatre company. That in turn led to acting work.
Career: Armstrong's screen debut came in the classic Michael Caine gangster movie Get Carter in 1971. Other early roles included parts in Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads?, Softly, Softly and The Sweeney. His many other TV roles include Austin Donaghue in Our Friends in the North, Detective Chief Inspector Frank Jefferson in In the Red, and George Mole in Adrian Mole: The Cappucino Years, alongside Alison Steadman. Film credits include The French Lieutenant's Woman (1981), Krull (1983), American Friends (1991), Patriot Games (1992) and Braveheart (1995). He has won countless accolades for his classic stage roles. He is currently best known for playing the role of Brian Lane in popular BBC series New Tricks, a part he played for 10 series.
Quote: 'I'm more concerned about losing my marbles than losing parts - especially when it comes to learning lines!'
Trivia: Armstrong originated the role of Thénardier in the London production of Les Misérables and won an Olivier Award for playing the title role in Sweeney Todd.
Keeley Fawcett (Actor) .. Carrie Willow
Geraldine McEwan (Actor) .. Mrs Gotobed
Pauline Quirke (Actor) .. Hepzibah Green
Born: July 08, 1958 in London
Best Known For: Playing Sharon in Birds of a Feather.
Early-life: Pauline Perpetua Quirke was born on July 8, 1959, in London. Along with her siblings Sean and Kitty, she was raised by her mother Hetty in a tenement flat with no hot running water. At the age of nine, she joined a drama club arranged by her English teacher and started winning small parts in children's TV shows and Dixon of Dock Green. This led to bigger roles in series such as ITV's You Must Be Joking. In 1976 she was given her own show, Pauline's Quirkes.
Career: In 1980 she made a brief appearance in The Elephant Man. Bigger roles came in Shine on Harvey Moon and Angels. In 1989, she was cast in the sitcom Birds of a Feather alongside best friend Linda Robson; it ran for nine years. In 1996, Quirke earned critical acclaim for her role in psychological drama The Sculptress, and was praised for her performance as a bereaved mother in Our Boy. She also appeared in Office Gossip, Real Women, Maisie Raine, Being April, Down to Earth and The Thieving Headmistress before having a two-year stint in Emmerdale. While appearing in the Yorkshire-based soap her character underwent the trauma of losing a son, which coincided with the actress losing six-and-a-half stone in weight. She's since starred in Broadchurch and the ITV revival of Birds of a Feather.
Quote: On nearing her target weight of 11 stone: 'I won't put myself through any surgical procedures if there's an alternative. It's all manageable. I've never been hungry.'
Trivia: Quirke suffers from osteoarthritis and has had a hip replaced. She suffers from stage fright. Her son, Charlie, plays Travis in Birds of a Feather.
Lesley Sharp (Actor) .. Lou Evans
Born: April 03, 1960 in Liverpool
Best Known For: Scott & Bailey
Early-life: Lesley was born in Manchester on April 3, 1960, but raised in Liverpool by her adoptive Scottish parents. She got to know her birth mother in later years, and pieced together her biological father's background while appearing on Who Do You Think You Are? One of her earliest memories involves the many summers she spent in Edinburgh - where it rained. Lesley claims to have watched a lot of TV as a child, but when she announced her intention of becoming an actress, her father wasn't pleased. She spent a year as a civil servant before landing a place at drama school.
Career: Sharp has rarely been out of work since the mid-1980s, but chooses her projects carefully, preferring to select top quality productions rather than jobs for the money. Her first movie was 1986's Rita, Sue and Bob Too. Roles in Road, The Rachel Papers and Close My Eyes followed. Frank Stubbs Promotes was a TV hit in 1993, the same year she worked on Naked, with Mike Leigh, with whom she re-teamed for Vera Drake. Her work in Playing the Field, Clocking Off and Bob and Rose made her one of the small screen's most sought-after actresses. Sharp has also worked extensively in the theatre, but is perhaps best known for playing DC Janet Scott in Scott & Bailey.
Quote: 'I don't believe in ghosts or anything like that, and I'm not religious, but I hate the idea that all this ends.'
Trivia: Her husband Nicholas Gleaves plays the role of DS Andy Roper in Scott and Bailey.
