Rupert Graves (Actor) .. David Martin
Born: June 30, 1963 in Weston-super-Mare
Best Known For: Appearing in period dramas.
Early-life: Rupert Graves was born June 30, 1963, in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset. The acting bug bit while performing in Victorian musical nights at the town's Birbeck Pier. Unhappy at school, he left at 15 to become a circus clown. He made his TV debut in 1978 in The Return Of The Saint and had small roles in various other productions. He later entertained children at holiday camps as part of Silly Billy Pickles And The Peanut Street Gang before his big break in Merchant Ivory's 1985 movie A Room With A View.
Career: Rejoined Merchant Ivory in 1987 to play a homosexual in Maurice, alongside James Wilby and Hugh Grant. The controversial role gained him fans of both sexes. He has tackled numerous challenging parts since, including a transvestite villain in Open Fire and the lover of a sex-change male in Different For Girls. He won the Best Actor award at the Montreal Film Festival for his part as a naive young man seduced by an older woman in Intimate Relations. Other notable productions include The Madness of King George, Mrs Dalloway, The Blonde Bombshell, Take A Girl Like You and Fortunes Of War. Graves has appeared on Broadway in Closer, and The Elephant Man. Has become a regular in a raft of top-notch detective shows, including Wallander, Lewis, and Sherlock and is very much in-demand.
Quote: 'I'm really pleased with myself. I've not had any training. I knew nothing about acting except that early on I knew I wanted to do it, and I've managed for years to do things without doing them just for the money.'
Trivia: He enjoys playing football.
Kate Hardie (Actor) .. Sue Stephens
Douglas Hodge (Actor) .. Det Con Peter Finch
Jim Carter (Actor) .. Det Chief Supt Young
Born: August 19, 1948 in Harrogate
Best Known For: Being a popular character actor.
Early-life: Jim was born in Harrogate on August 19, 1948. At the University of Sussex, he studied law and was a member of their drama society. He dropped out of university after two years to join a fringe theatre group, the Brighton Combination.
Career: In 1977, Carter joined the National Theatre Company and a year later became a member of the Young Vic Company. In the same year, he went to America to learn juggling, unicycling and tightrope walking. Over the years, Carter has starred in a number of National Theatre productions, including The Mayor of Zalamea, Guys and Dolls and The President of an Empty Room. One of the busiest character actors around, his TV credits are numerous and include A Monocled Mutineer, The Singing Detective, A Very British Coup, Lipstick on Your Collar, Minder, Cracker, Midsomer Murders and Cranford. Equally prolific on the big screen, he has starred in A Private Function (1984), Brassed Off (1996), Shakespeare in Love (1998), 102 Dalmations (2000), Ella Enchanted (2004), The Golden Compass (2007) and My Week with Marilyn (2011). In 2010, he began playing butler Mr Carson in the hugely popular Downton Abbey, a role that has brought him international recognition.
Quote: 'I've been recognised a lot more since playing Carson, although in England people are naturally quite diffident about leaping up to you. In America it's a different story.'
Trivia: Carter has been chairman of Hampstead Cricket Club since 2010.
Colin McCormack (Actor) .. Det Chief Supt Haylor
Eddie Izzard (Actor) .. Rich
Born: February 07, 1962 in Aden, Yemen
Best Known For: His whimsical stand-up routines.
Early-life: Born Edward John Izzard on February 7, 1962, in Aden, Yemen, while his father was on business there for BP. His mother was a midwife who died of cancer in 1968, after which he and his older brother, Mark, were sent to boarding schools. The family moved around a lot, living in Northern Ireland, then South Wales, before settling in Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex. After attending boarding school, he studied accountancy at Sheffield University, but dropped out. He claims that by four he knew he was a transvestite, and by seven that he wanted to be an actor.
Career: Izzard was a street performer before tackling stand-up at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and London's comedy clubs. He then began touring the country. Sell-out gigs led to acting roles. He's since become a star in the US and his movie credits include Velvet Goldmine, Mystery Men, Shadow of the Vampire, Ocean's Twelve and Thirteen, My Super Ex-Girlfriend and Valkyrie. He starred alongside Minnie Driver in two seasons of US drama The Riches. Izzard also played Grandpa in Mockinbird Lane, a revamp of classic series The Munsters, and has had a regular role in Hannibal. He continues to tour with his stand-up routines.
Quote: 'I can go from blokey to girlie in 15 minutes and then I'm out the door. But that's the fastest I can do it. Becoming a woman takes work.'
Trivia: He won a special BBC Sports Personality of the Year award in 2009 after raising money for Sport Relief by completing 43 marathons in 51 days despite having no prior history of running.
