Early-life:
Kevin Patrick Smith was born in Red Bank, New Jersey, on August 2, 1970 to Grace and Donald. He has an older sister, Virginia, and an older brother, Donald Jr. His first movie, Clerks (1994), was made for $27,575 and filmed at the convenience store where he worked. It won the highest award at the Sundance film festival and went on to gross more than $3million.
Career:
Smith's second film, Mallrats (1995), had a $6million budget but it was a box-office flop. He bounced back in 1997 with the romantic comedy Chasing Amy. His career since then has been hit-and-miss. His credits include Dogma (1999), Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001), Jersey Girl (2004), Clerks II (2006) and Zack and Miri Make a Porno (2008).
