David Dickinson (Host)
Born: August 16, 1941 in Cheadle Heath, Stockport
Best Known For: His flamboyant presenting style
Early-life: Born August 16, 1941. Shortly afterwards, he was adopted by a childless couple from Cheadle, Lancashire. His father died when Dickinson was 12, leaving his mother to work long hours to support them. He remembers his childhood as happy and spent a lot of time with his grandmother. On leaving school at 14, Dickinson worked as an apprentice engineer before becoming a commissions agent, selling textiles to importers. In his early 20s he was reunited with his birth mother, who revealed his family had Armenian roots.
Career: Dickinson was later his cabaret-artist wife's manager and, while touring with her, found time to explore antiques shops and markets. After building up his knowledge, Dickinson and a childhood friend set up an antiques business. After two further ventures folded, he concentrated on trading only at big fairs. In the late 1990s, a BBC documentary followed his preparations for an Olympia show. That led to five series of The Antiques Hunter, and later the BBC's daytime hit Bargain Hunt, which was promoted to prime time. He now presents Dickinson's Real Deal on ITV. He appeared on the first series of Strictly Come Dancing. He is also something of a cult hero, famous for his impressive tan, which Terry Wogan frequently quips make him look as though he has been steeped in strong tea.
Quote: 'What a bobby dazzler.'
Trivia: He has written several books.
