He claims that benign spirits sometimes take children away to spare them further suffering, and believes this has happened to both the girl they are searching for and Mulder's sister. A suspicious Scully uses more conventional detective work to get to the truth, and learns of a connection between Mulder's sister and the Cigarette Smoking Man
