Early-life: Born Jacob Benjamin Gyllenhaal on December 19, 1980, in Los Angeles, the son of film director Stephen Gyllenhaal and producer and screenwriter Naomi Foner. He's the younger brother of critically acclaimed actress Maggie Gyllenhaal and his godmother is Jamie Lee Curtis; Paul Newman gave him his first driving lesson. He was acting by the age of 11, appearing on the big screen in a brief turn as Billy Crystal's son in City Slickers in 1991, and in the little-seen kid's adventure Josh and S.A.M. in 1993. But his parents also insisted that he tackle ordinary jobs so that he would learn to appreciate his otherwise privileged upbringing.
Career: Gyllenhaal won critical praise and an army of fans with his breakout performance in Donnie Darko in 2001. He played opposite Jennifer Aniston in another Sundance Film Festival favourite, 2002's The Good Girl, and once again earned good reviews. Marking his theatre debut, Gyllenhaal arrived on the London stage with a starring role in Kenneth Lonergan's revival of This Is Our Youth. Next he played against type as a soldier during the first Gulf War in Jarhead. His role as a sexually conflicted ranch hand in Brokeback Mountain earned him more rave reviews, and he's followed this with Zodiac, Rendition, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Source Code, Prisoners and Nightcrawler.

Early-life: Dennis William Quaid was born in Houston, Texas, on April 9, 1954. His mother was an estate agent, his father an electrician who was related to Western star Gene Autry. Dennis's older brother, Randy, is also an actor. They have a half-sibling called Buddy. Dennis studied acting at university, but dropped out so he could begin his career after seeing Randy's success in the early 1970s.
Career: After an initial struggle to find work, Quaid had a number of small roles on TV and in film before enjoying success with 1979's Breaking Away. He co-starred with Randy, as well as the Keach brothers and the Carradines, in the Western The Long Riders a year later. Quaid gained great reviews for the movie The Right Stuff in 1983, the same year he made the disastrous Jaws 3-D. The late-1980s brought him a series of box-office hits, such as Enemy Mine (1985), The Big Easy (1986), Innerspace (1987), Suspect (1987) and DOA (1988). Movies since then include Great Balls of Fire (1989), Wyatt Earp (1994), Traffic (2000) and Far from Heaven (2002), for which he won a clutch of awards. More recent offerings include GI Joe: Rise of the Cobra (2009), Pandorum (2009) and the remake of Footloose (2011). He starred in short-lived period drama Vegas, which ran for one season before being cancelled.

Best Known For: Shameless and a number of movies.
Early-life: Emmanuelle Grey Rossum was born in New York on September 12, 1986. At the age of seven, Emmy joined the Metropolitan Opera Children's Chorus and went on to perform in more than 20 operas at Lincoln Center. An interest in acting led to her taking classes at the New Actors Workshop in New York. She later attended Columbia University.
Career: In 1997, Rossum made her TV debut in an episode of Law & Order. She went on to join the daytime soap As the World Turns in 1999 and played a young Audrey Hepburn in the TV movie The Audrey Hepburn Story (2000). Her first major film was Clint Eastwood's Mystic River (2003). The following year, she starred in The Day After Tomorrow (2004) and was cast in the main role of Christine Daae in a big-screen adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera (2004), a role that earned her a Golden Globe nomination. After starring in the big-budget Poseidon (2006), Rossum has largely focused on independent films, including Dare (2009). Since 2009, Rossum has played Fiona Gallagher in the American version of Shameless.

Best Known For: More than 40 years of acclaimed film and theatre roles.
Early-life: Ian Holm Cuthbert was born on September 12, 1931, in Goodmayes, Ilford. His father worked as a psychiatrist and superintendent at the local mental asylum. His brother Eric died of cancer in 1944. He attended Chigwell Grammar School, and became interested in acting after watching a production of Les Miserables, starring Charles Laughton. He began studying at Rada in 1950 and, after a year of National Service, joined the Royal Shakespeare Company.
Career: Holm's first professional appearance was as a spear carrier in a 1956 production of Othello. In the 1960s and 1970s, he was said to be the most likely successor to Laurence Olivier. His first memorable screen appearance came in 1968's A Midsummer Night's Dream. His most famous movies since include Alien, Chariots of Fire, Greystoke, Brazil, The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Day After Tomorrow.
Quote: "I'm a small, stumpy guy who came into movies a bit late."
Trivia: He was awarded a CBE in 1990 and knighted in 1998.

Early-life: Sela Ann Ward was born in Meridian, Mississippi on July 11, 1956. She attended the University of Alabama and graduated with a degree in fine art and advertising in 1977. As a student, she was Homecoming Queen, a cheerleader for the Crimson Tide football team and a member of the Chi Omega sorority. She moved to New York to work in advertising and supplemented her income with modelling work, leading her to be featured in TV adverts. Eventually, she moved to California to pursue acting.
Career: Ward's first TV role was in Emerald Point N.A.S. and her first film role was in The Man Who Loved Women (1983). She got guest roles in TV and film throughout the rest of the 1980s, such as in Nothing in Common (1986). From 1991 to 1996, she played Teddy Reed in the TV series Sisters. She has since had recurring roles in Once and Again, House, CSI: NY and Graves. Her film credits include The Fugitive (1993), The Day After Tomorrow (2004), Gone Girl (2014) and Independence Day: Resurgence (2016).
