Early-life:
Elaine Constance Smith was born in Glasgow on August 2, 1958. She trained to be an actor at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama and Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh. In 1986, she first demonstrated her gift for comedy on the small screen in BBC sketch show Naked Video. She also starred in Scottish sitcom City Lights.
Career:
Smith's big break came in 1990 when she began playing Mary Nesbitt in the BBC sitcom Rab C Nesbitt alongside Gregor Fisher. The popular series ran for eight series until 1999. It returned for a one-off Christmas special in 2008, a ninth series aired in 2010 and tenth series followed a year later. It returned for a one-off special in January 2014. Away from Rab C Nesbitt, Smith has starred in Two Thousand Acres of Sky and 55 Degrees North. She has also headlined a number of Scottish pantomimes in Glasgow and Aberdeen, and toured with a number of productions, including Guys and Dolls, Shirley Valentine and Calendar Girls. In 2012, she played Susan Boyle in I Dreamed a Dream, a stage musical she co-wrote with Alan McHugh.
