John Castle (Actor) .. Det Insp Craddock
Renee Asherton (Actor) .. Miss Bunner
Kevin Whately (Actor) .. Det Sgt Fletcher
Born: February 06, 1951 in Newcastle upon Tyne
Best Known For: Playing John Thaw's right-hand man Lewis in Inspector Morse.
Early-life: Kevin George Edward Whately was born on February 6, 1951, in Hexham, and grew up in the remote Northumberland countryside. His father was in the Navy, and Whately only saw him two or three times a year. He began acting at the age of four and it remained a passion throughout school, alongside a short-lived desire to be a doctor. When his careers teacher advised against acting, he went into accountancy for three years. He later trained at the Central School of Speech and Drama. His brother, Frank, is a drama lecturer.
Career: Whately's TV debut came in a 1979 episode of Shoestring. Two years later he had a six-week stint on Coronation Street. His big break came in 1983, when he landed the role of Neville in Auf Wiedersehen, Pet. In 1987, he made his first appearance as Sgt Lewis in Morse, and has since appeared in Peak Practice, the TV dramas Trip Trap, Gobble, and The Broker's Man, as well as Oscar-winning drama The English Patient. Other projects include Paranoid, Silent Cry, Murder in Mind, Purely Belter, Promoted to Glory and The Children. He's now the star of hit Morse spin-off Lewis.
Quote: On John Thaw: "John had a wonderful sense of humour which is belied sometimes by journalists' impression of him as irascible. He was a wonderful mimic, particularly of people on the set rather than famous people."
Trivia: Married to actress Madeleine Newton, who appeared alongside him in both Auf Wiedersehen, Pet and Inspector Morse. They have two children, Kieran and Kitty. His daughter is an acclaimed opera singer.
Joan Sims (Actor) .. Miss Murgatroyd
Born: May 09, 1930 in Essex
Best Known For: Her roles in the Carry On films.
Early-life: Irene Joan Marion Sims was born in Essex on May 9, 1930. She was the daughter of a railway station master and would often put on performances for waiting passengers. After failing a number of auditions, she was finally accepted into Rada and graduated in 1950.
Career: Sims went on to appear in a number of farces at Brian Rix's Aldwych Theatre but she preferred working on films. She made her first appearance on the big screen in 1953 opposite George Cole in Will Any Gentleman? She followed this up with roles in Trouble in Store and Doctor in the House. She continued her run in comedy films when she was offered a part in Carry On Nurse. She went on to become a regular in the Carry On series, appearing in 24, including Carry On Screaming, Carry On Henry, and Carry On Camping. After the Carry On films ended in 1978, Sims became a regular face on TV, making appearances in Worzel Gummidge, In Loving Memory, Doctor Who, Farrington of the F.O., Simon and the Witch, On the Up, As Time Goes By, and The Last of the Blonde Bombshells. She died on June 27, 2001, at the age of 71.
Quote: "Men are put off by funny women."
Trivia: Years of heavy drinking took their toll and she suffered with ill health in her later years. She had difficulty working with Frankie Howerd because they could not stop laughing.
Sylvia Syms (Actor) .. Mrs Easterbrook
Born: January 06, 1934 in London
Best Known For: At Home with the Braithwaites and her 1950s movie roles.
Early-life: Sylvia Syms was born on January 6, 1934, in London. Not to be confused with the Broadway singer of the same name, this Sylvia Syms was an evacuee and was educated at various convent schools and a grammar school. She honed her acting craft at Rada where she received The Gerald Lawrence Scholarship and an HM Tenants Award.
Career: Syms' first film role came in 1953's It Happens Every Thursday. Three years later, her big break came in My Teenage Daughter. She was a highly popular star for the next 15 years thanks to such movies as Ice-Cold in Alex, Expresso Bongo, Victim, and The Quare Fellow, featuring arguably her best performance. She was also nominated for a Bafta for The Tamarind Seed in 1974. Since then, her most memorable work has largely been on TV, although she did have a small role in 1989's Shirley Valentine. She had a regular role in Peak Practice in the mid-1990s and became a familiar face again thanks to At Home with the Braithwaites.
