Martin Shaw (Actor) .. Cdr Adam Dalgliesh
Born: January 21, 1945 in Birmingham
Best Known For: Jumping over car bonnets in The Professionals.
Early-life: Martin Shaw was born on January 21, 1945, in Birmingham, the son of a furnace engineer. He made his stage debut at the age of three alongside his parents in an amateur production, continued acting through school, and joined a local theatre group. Encouraged by a drama teacher, he enrolled at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art in 1963 and was spotted there by Alec Guinness during a performance of Thunder Rock.
Career: Shaw's first major TV role was in a 1967 episode of Coronation Street. Keen on Shakespeare, he appeared in a TV movie of Hamlet, and Roman Polanski's 1971 film Macbeth. After impressing TV executives with his performance alongside Lewis Collins as Purdey's ex-fiance in The New Avengers, he landed the part of Doyle in The Professionals. When it was axed after four years in 1981, he went back to the stage. In 1993 he returned to TV with The Chief, and three years later starred in BBC mega-flop Rhodes. Since then, he's appeared in The Scarlet Pimpernel, A&E, Judge John Deed, Death in Holy Orders, Inspector George Gently, Apparitions and picked up a Tony nomination for a Broadway production of An Ideal Husband.
Quote: 'I'm very opinionated and if people cross me at work - if people who don't know about the job try telling me what to do - I become very stubborn and really rather unpleasant.'
Trivia: Shaw is a vegan.
Janie Dee (Actor) .. Emma Lavenham
Nicholas Le Prevost (Actor) .. Marcus Dupayne
Samantha Bond (Actor) .. Caroline Dupayne
Michael Maloney (Actor) .. Neville Dupayne
(Actor) .. Marie Strickland
Kerry Fox (Actor) .. Muriel Godby
Born: July 30, 1966 in Wellington, New Zealand
Best Known For: Starring in Shallow Grave.
Early-life: Kerry was born in New Zealand in 1966, and grew up just outside Wellington. She discovered her love of acting at a young age, but didn't originally plan to pursue it as a career, choosing to go to Victoria University instead. From there, she went on to win a place at the New Zealand Drama School, now called Toi Whakaari, where she caught the eye of director Jane Campion.
Career: Shortly after graduating, Kerry was cast in the lead role of Jane Campion's An Angel at My Table, a biopic of New Zealand writer Janet Frame. Despite winning rave reviews for her performance, Kerry says it took a while for the offers to come flooding in - she believes the two stone she put on for the role may have been a factor. However, she went on to be cast in director Danny Boyle's acclaimed TV drama Mr Wroe's Virgins in 1993 and his film Shallow Grave the following year, and since then she's continued to mix TV and film work. Her credits include Welcome to Sarajevo, The Murder Room and Inconceivable, and in 2009 she reunited with Campion for Bright Star.
Quote: 'I want to work really hard and I want to be challenged - I don't want to faff around.'
Trivia: Fox has developed a reputation for playing fiercely intelligent, independent-minded woman.
Jack Shepherd (Actor) .. James Calder-Hale
Born: October 29, 1940 in Leeds
Best Known For: Wycliffe.
Early-life: Jack was born in Leeds on October 29, 1940. He studied fine art at Kings College, Newcastle, and during his time in the North East, he was an amateur actor with the People's Theatre. He went on to study acting at the Central School of Speech and Drama, and the Drama Centre London.
Career: Shepherd worked at the Royal Court Theatre in London from 1965 to 1969, and during the 1970s, he was a regular on TV, appearing in Budgie, The Adventures of Black Beauty, Bill Brand, Crown Court, and Ready When You Are, Mr McGill. From 1977 to 1985, he was a member of Bill Bryden's Cottesloe Theatre Company at the National Theatre. He continued to work on TV, appearing in the likes of Blind Justice, Shoot to Kill, Between the Lines, Lovejoy, High Stakes, The Jury, Silent Witness, All About George, The Nativity, and The Politician's Husband. The peak of his TV popularity came when he played the title role in ITV detective drama Wycliffe from 1993 to 1998. He has also written and directed a number of stage plays.
Quote: 'I got addicted to the creative process when I was at art school, from the age of 18 to 22. I was already writing play sketches and all kinds of things at that time.'
Trivia: Shepherd is an accomplished jazz musician. He won an Olivier award in 1984 for his role in Glengarry Glen Ross.
