Early-life:
Melanie Jane Hill was born on January 11, 1962 in Sunderland. She attended Monkwearmouth School before going on to study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Her earliest TV credits include Juliet Bravo and Auf Wiedersehen, Pet.
Career:
Hill's career has focussed largely on British TV. She played Aveline in Bread from 1989 to 1991, Marie Carver in The Bill and Avril Kent in Emmerdale, to name some of her roles. She has also made some film appearances, including in Brassed Off (1996), Stardust (2007) and White Girl (2008). She joined the cast of Waterloo Road in 2012, playing Maggie, and stayed until the series ended three years later. Since 2015, she has played Cathy Matthews in Coronation Street.
