George Cole (Actor) .. Arthur Daley
Born: April 22, 1925 in London
Best Known For: Playing Arthur Daley in Minder.
Early-life: George Edward Cole was born in London on April 22, 1925. His mother, whom he never met, abandoned him at 10 days old, and he was adopted by the Cole family. George left school to be a butcher's boy, but won a part in a touring musical and opted for acting instead. At 15 he and his adoptive mother moved in with Alastair Sim's family after he appeared in a film with the thespian. They helped him lose his cockney accent, and he stayed with them until his first marriage at 27.
Career: Cole made his big-screen debut in 1941's Cottage to Let, but didn't achieve fame until he landed the part of Flash Harry in the classic St Trinian's films. He went on to have a successful career on stage, TV and in movies, often appearing opposite mentor Sim in such productions as Scrooge and The Green Man. TV credits include My Good Friend, Dad, An Independent Man, Blott on the Landscape and Minder, which ran for 15 years. In his later years, he appeared in Station Jim, Bodily Harm, Mary Reilly, A Class Apart, and Diamond Geezer. He died on August 6, 2015, after a long illness. He was 90.
Quote: "I made my first film in 1940. I can't think much has changed apart from the equipment and cost."
Trivia: In 2013, Cole published his autobiography, The World Was My Lobster.
Glynn Edwards (Actor) .. Dave
Dennis Waterman (Actor) .. Terry McCann
Born: February 24, 1948 in Clapham
Best Known For: The Sweeney, Minder, and New Tricks.
Early-life: Born February 24, 1948, in Clapham, south London, the youngest of nine children, the son of a British Rail ticket collector. As a child he attended the Corona Theatre School and began his professional career with a role in Snowball, a 1960 Children's Film Foundation production. The same year he made Night Train to Inverness, and was asked to join the Royal Shakespeare Company. Playing William in a TV series based on the Just William books made him a star. He then tried to break into Hollywood.
Career: At 16, Waterman returned to Britain and concentrated on stage work until an acclaimed performance in 1968's Up the Junction led to more film roles. Low-budget movies (such as Scars of Dracula) and TV shows (including Colditz) followed until, in 1974, he co-starred with John Thaw in Regan, the pilot episode of iconic series The Sweeney, which became a major TV hit. A 10-year stint in comedy drama Minder followed. Other projects include TV shows On the Up, Stay Lucky, and Circles of Deceit. He's also worked on the stage, most notably in Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell, and My Fair Lady. As Gerry Standing, in BBC drama New Tricks, he has introduced himself to a new generation of fans.
Quote: "If I am not such a hell-raiser any more, it isn't because I've given up. It's just that my energy levels have fallen. I haven't stopped looking at women. I'm not blind."
Trivia: He has made several records, including, famously, the theme tunes of several of his TV shows.
Jimmy Nail (Actor) .. Nathan Loveridge
Born: March 16, 1954 in Newcastle upon Tyne
Best Known For: Oz in Auf Wiedersehen, Pet .
Early-life: Born James Michael Aloysius Bradford on March 16, 1954, in Newcastle upon Tyne. His dad was a professional footballer with Huddersfield Town. A wayward youth, Nail engaged in petty crime and football hooliganism, landing a spell in Strangeways Prison for a GBH conviction. Back outside, he became a welder before his showbusiness career took off. He also sang in a rock band called King Crabs.
Career: Nail hit the big time in 1983 when he was cast as Oz in Auf Wiedersehen, Pet, and his striking appearance landed him roles in the films Howling II (1985), Morons From Outer Space (1985) and Just Ask for Diamond (1988). He then went on to write and star in his own TV series Spender and the semi-autobiographical Crocodile Shoes. Films include Danny, the Champion of the World (1990), Evita (1996) with Madonna, and Still Crazy (1998) (with Auf Wiedersehen, Pet co-stars Timothy Spall and Bill Nighy). He enjoyed a musical career, with chart hits Love Don't Live Here Anymore, Ain't No Doubt and Crocodile Shoes, which sold 900,000 copies in 1994. The 2002 run of Auf Wiedersehen, Pet sprang from Nail's chance meeting with creator Franc Roddam in London. Nail agreed to do a new series on the spot and, after a few phone calls, the rest of the cast followed suit. It was followed up with a further two series and has now come to a dignified end. He is currently starring on Broadway in Sting's The Last Ship.
Quote: "I find it very hard to play a part, then take it off like a cheap suit and become Mr Normal."
Trivia: He published his autobiography, A Northern Soul, in 2005.
June Whitfield (Actor) .. Mrs Murdoch
Born: November 11, 1925 in London
Best Known For: Terry and June, and Absolutely Fabulous.
Early-life: Born June Rosemary Whitfield in Streatham, London, on November 11, 1925. Her mother had hoped to become an actress, but was forbidden to do so by her father. Instead, she appeared in amateur dramatics and encouraged June to enter showbusiness by enrolling her in dance classes at the age of three. Her father was a company director. After the Second World War she moved to Huddersfield with her parents and trained to be a secretary before attending RADA, after which she landed her first professional role on the London stage.
Career: Whitfield became one of BBC Radio's most beloved stars - 22 million people regularly tuned in to her show Take It From Here during the 1950s - but is probably best known for her TV appearances, and has starred alongside Frankie Howerd, Peter Sellers and Tony Hancock. Among her many comedy programmes during the first half of her career were Steptoe and Son, Hancock's Half Hour and The Benny Hill Show. Her long professional relationship with Terry Scott resulted in such series as Happy Ever After and Terry and June. She has also appeared in several Carry On films. Since then Whitfield has won acclaim in Absolutely Fabulous, The Last of the Blonde Bombshells, Jude and Mirrorball.
Quote: "I was never a great beauty. I think I amused more than I aroused. But at least that meant I didn't feel the pressures that many glamorous actresses do when they reach a certain age. Playing mums and grans never bothered me."
Trivia: She was awarded an OBE in 1985, and a CBE in 1998.
Patrick Malahide (Actor) .. Chisholm
Born: March 24, 1945 in Reading
Best Known For: Playing Detective Sergeant Chisholm in Minder and a string of other roles.

Quote: "If I'm walking past a building site, I get `Oi, Chisholm" from Minder fans. But if I go to a library, a female librarian will flutter her eyelashes at me because she remembers Middlemarch."
Trivia: Malahide was nominated for a Bafta TV Award for his role in The Singing Detective.
Ray Winstone (Actor) .. Arnie
Born: February 19, 1957 in London
