Best Known For: Playing Derek Morgan in Criminal Minds.
Early-life: Shemar Franklin Moore was born on April 20, 1970, in Oakland, California. His mother is of Irish-French-Canadian descent, while his father is African-American. When his parents split up, he and his mother moved to Holland. Moore only spoke Dutch at home, and didn't learn English until he was six. He also spent time growing up in Denmark, Bahrain, Germany, the Virgin Islands and Africa before returning to the US, where he studied communications and played baseball at the Santa Clara University.
Career: Moore began his working life as a model, and built up a fanbase thanks to his often bare-chested photo shoots. He later turned to acting, making his TV debut in an episode of Living Single. Roles in such programmes as The Jamie Foxx Show, Chicago Hope, Moesha, For Your Love and Malcolm & Eddie followed. His first film was 1998's Hav Plenty, but he didn't become a famous name until a four-year stint hosting Soul Train on US TV. In 2001 he landed a regular role in soap The Young and the Restless and stayed with the show for two years, then returned for another 12 months in 2004. He's since featured in the series Birds of Prey and Criminal Minds.
Quote: "Let a woman have her place, because as you provide foundation for her, she provides a foundation for you. And through that vulnerability comes strength."
Trivia: He has done several charity events to raise money for MS research.
